Nationwide protests in France against high prices and fraying of social security system
Mobilisation follows calls on social media to revive the gilets jaunes movement that emerged in 2018 Demonstrations have begun across France in what is expected to become a major nationwide protest against high prices and the fraying of a model intended to provide a basic level of opportunity and social security. Saturday’s mobilisation follows calls on social media to revive the gilets jaunes (yellow vests) movement, which emerged in 2018 against social injustice. Continue reading...

"Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding." www.ahmath.org/statements
AHM Statement on OpenAI’s October 6 Release of Mathematical Documents

Yesterday, on October 6th, 2026, OpenAI – which is currently defending lawsuits against accusations of illegal plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution – released a repository of manuscripts purporting to contain solutions to a number of high-profile problems in mathematics.

Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done. The Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence, from whom OpenAI has claimed to derive its legitimacy, opened their initial advisory statement by saying that frontier AI corporations should not test advanced mathematical problems on internal models. In ignoring the central premise of the Advisory Group’s position, OpenAI has indicated total disregard for the norms of scientific research — norms that guarantee that mathematics remains trustworthy, ethically researched, and in the public interest.

Mathematicians have a particular vision of progress that is informed by history and field-specific considerations. We reject OpenAI's assertion that this release advances our subject, and we urge mathematicians and the public to view the value of this publication model with due skepticism.

Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power. We urge mathematicians to discontinue their work with OpenAI and to return to a vision of science that centers human understanding.

No matter where you shop, you're getting screwed by Amazon. Amazon has found a way to make everything you buy - at Target, at a mom-and-pop shop, even direct from the manufacturer - more expensive. And they're not the only one: Expedia's done the same thing, but for hotel rooms.

Men find yet another way to film and harass women without consent, this time, using a remote controlled robot to push against a "16-year-old girl's buttocks", and this is how the most well-resourced news agencies cover it: Read *our* piece here: www.404media.co/theres-nothi...
The English coverage by even well-resourced outlets like CNN, CBC, and the BBC have almost no information beyond the police press release, which is lazy and stupid, because it is possible to figure out everything that happened here with three seconds of clicking around the internet. The Associated Press wrote that the entire phenomenon is "new territory" for the police, which, I'm sorry to say, men using tech to harass women on livestreams in 2026 is not "unusual" or "new territory" and hasn't been for many years.

Lovely finished form to the lintel on this lock-up. Here at Northleach, even places for detention have a certain Cotswold charm! #AdoorableThursday
A brown-painted door, slightly ajar, leads into a dark lock-up. The door contains a small grilled panel to let in light while above the door the lintel resembles a flattened ogee arch. A white sign on the door says “The Lock-Up” in large capital letters. The walls to either side are made from classic Cotswold stone.

As much as one would like to imagine supporters of the AfD as passive victims longing for an alternative to neoliberalism, a left-wing alternative was available and was actively rejected. A near majority of voters chose a far-right party that plans to dismantle the welfare state, but also promises a national revival through mass deportations of the supposedly parasitic foreign masses that have been holding back the German people. The AfD made no secret of its aims and means, and for many this was the appeal. As historian Peter Fritzsche once wrote, “Germans became Nazis because they wanted to become Nazis and because the Nazis spoke so well to their interests and inclinations.”

Government says ambition for 2036 will be good for food and climate resilience, but concerns remain over funding The government has set an ambition to increase the share of English land farmed organically to 10% by 2036, but concerns remain over how the transition will be funded. Currently, just 3.4% of England’s agricultural land is farmed organically, one of the smallest shares in Europe. France, for example, farms 10.4% of its land organically, and aims to increase this to 18% by 2027. Continue reading...
