A #painting from everyday Ireland, "Sheep, Stone Wall II". If you see sheep every day, that is. Like I used to, when I had a little dog and we'd walk for miles stopping every so often to let the sheep look at us as we'd talk about the countryside and how yellow it all seemed. #SpeirGhorm #ArtYear

Square canvas in acrylics. Against a background of all golden yellow in varying painterly shades, some more orange, are four sheep. They are white with navy, almost black, heads, legs and shadows underneath. No eyes can be made out but their ears project out sideways. All are standing except the nearest which is sitting facing towards the viewer. The wool is lilac in the middle with touches of pink as it transitions from the white on top in the sun to navy in shadow and when dark wool. Wool color edges are not blended but hard in a stylised fashion. Behind them in the mid-distance is a low dry-stone wall of navy and white stones, with seven navy fence posts rising at intervals from it. In the foreground are some darker low tufts of a green created by a dark blue washed over with yellow. Photo taken before my signature was added.

Erected in 1995, the Nehanzō was constructed to house sacred Buddhist relics gifted from Myanmar as an expression of gratitude for decades of medical supplies and humanitarian aid provided by the temple. Nanzo-in also serves as the chief location on the historic Sasaguri 88 Temple Pilgrimage route, welcoming pilgrims into the forested hills of Kyushu. The extraordinary bronze casting and structural engineering required to realize the massive monument embody the zenith of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal mastery and technological precision), integrating monumental art harmoniously within the surrounding topography.

Surging through churning, frothing waves, a fantastical pleasure boat anchored by a monumental, jet-black crow figurehead carves its path into the early morning light. Atop the horizon, the deep crimson orb of the first sunrise of the New Year (hatsuhinode) rises above low clouds and distant mountain peaks. Standing poised aboard the decorated hull, an elegant woman in a mauve, plum-blossom-patterned kimono holds aloft a shallow porcelain dish containing a potted New Year arrangement, while her companion in a coral-red shibori garment sits attentively at her side. The stark contrast between the crow’s light-absorbing black feathers, the crisp spray of white water, and the soft pastel robes creates a vivid sensory landscape, evoking the biting chill of an early morning sea breeze infused with the faint scent of salt and spring buds.
Designed around 1800 by master woodblock printmaker Utagawa Toyokuni I (1769–1825), this polychrome print (nishiki-e) fuses Edo-period bijinga (pictures of beautiful women) with auspicious New Year mythology and mitate (playful poetic allusion). The crow boat (karasu-bune) draws upon sacred Shinto lore—wherein the crow is venerated as a divine sun-messenger and guide—blended with the popular urban custom of gathering to witness the first sunrise (hatsuhinode) for health and good fortune. The potted plant held aloft, traditionally fukujusō (pheasant's eye) or dwarf pine, serves as a harbinger of wealth, resilience, and longevity. The intricate carving of the wave patterns and the flawless registration of delicate pigments reflect the peak of Edo-period monozukuri (artisanal mastery), requiring a seamless synthesis between artist, block-cutter, and printer.

Covid is surging in Portland. I've got it, it's breaking out in Reynolds, PPS, I'm sure other schools. Multiple friends and neighbors have it, all contracted from different sources. Covid never went away. It's just that we all pretend that it is no longer a horrible illness and no one masks.

We see this on full display in various geek(nerd) discourse. The lack of 3rd spaces has also contributed to this. Humanity is largely siloed. Many ppl have lost the ability to exist in community with people who don't believe/identify exactly the way they do.

A #painting of some birds. "Rooks, Wires, Hedgerow" came out of a menacing afternoon when I cycled around West Cork. The coastline looked magnificent but I spent a lot of time looking at rooks. In general you can't go too far wrong when you spend a lot of time looking at rooks. #SpéirGhorm #ArtYear
