remember: it saved no net money, social services US citizens are getting cut, and left the US in a weaker place geopolitically. none of the debates about fiscal responsibility, obligation to US citizens first, or 'hard choices' actually apply. they're all bullshit. killed people for nothing at all.

What 'moderation' really means is adopting the views of a very small group of loud, centrist writers and their big business backers, and is increasingly out of step with (a) the big problems in the US and (b) the polling on what Americans say are the biggest problems they want government to fix.

one thing ezra klein does not seem to understand is that the democratic party has been proscribed insofar as all of its political priorities are illegal. court reform must precede literally everything.

This is the best possible future scenario for democracy in TX. The GOP was very competitive in OR, WA, and CA in the 90s, but now is basically unviable in statewide races because their brand just became too toxic for a majority of voters and the GOP primary electorate refused to course correct.

Van Hollen is right: Israel is guilty of ethnic cleansing, apartheid, & genocide against the Palestinian people. US officials, under Biden and Trump, who have aided and abetted these crimes by providing taxpayer dollars, bombs and political support to Israel have no place in future administrations.
Democrats must stand firm against these headwinds. Primary voters won't trust any Democratic presidential candidate who does not have a record of moral and strategic clarity on these issues, especially if, as a legislator, he or she voted to send Mr. Netanyahu bombs even as his overnment imposed a total blockade on
Gaza. Nor will they support a candidate who plans to re-enlist the senior Democratic decision makers who whitewashed the truth during the Biden administration and refuse to acknowledge their complicity.

this is the closest I've ever come to actually suggesting a "one neat trick" suggestion for anything, but I'm so serious here. the Virginia Constitution gives the legislature the power to set retirement ages for judges "REGARDLESS OF THE TERM TO WHICH ELECTED OR APPOINTED." make it 54 right now.

How Virginia Democrats can overturn the redistricting ruling: Retire the Supreme Court
The state Constitution gives lawmakers complete latitude to set the judicial retirement age. They should use it.

That's because the only pathway forward requires: a) Gaining the trifecta in 2028; b) Nuking the filibuster; c) Expanding the House and either banning gerrymandering or making each state a single multi-member district; d) Unpacking the Court; e) Court reform; and f) A slew of legislative fixes.

Regardless, the *only* arguments against radical hardball (in the service of republican democracy) are no longer persuasive. The Trump GOP only maintains norms and rules — such as the filibuster — that it views as power-politically expedient. So "but we'll open the door to worse" is a sucker's game.

I don’t think it’s sufficient for Democratic officials to treat these rulings like partisan acts from an out of control activist court. They should be regarded as part of a criminal conspiracy against the republic.

they're playing with fire doing this right before democrats take control of a bunch of swing states, and the impact on house control will be relatively low; but republicans have a doctrinal opposition to black people having elected representation, so of course it must happen immediately

The most important reason why Democrats should refuse to capitulate to these illegal and illegitimate acts like what just took place in Virginia is because capitulation only reinforces the belief that politics is futile, which in turn increases the probability that people will turn to violence.

This is treating Trump v. United States as law. It is not law. It is anti-law. It belongs in that category of Supreme Court decisions which were not merely wrong, they were illegitimate and non-binding from the day they were issued. It is owed no more respect than Lincoln gave Dred Scott.

It tells things.
