This video of a Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx) was taken by Sondre Eriksen Hensema (@itseriksen on IG). There are 4 species in genus Lynx & what's striking is that 2 of them are in North America, 2 in Eurasia... but the lynx line originates in Africa. Let's learn more about these right-sized kitties.

Cranes in Kushiro-shi, Hokkaido Prefecture, Japan. Photography by Toru Kona on 500px
Standing side-by-side upon a blanket of pristine Hokkaido snow in Kushiro, a pair of red-crowned cranes (tancho) throw their beaks to the winter sky in a synchronized, trumpeting courtship duet. Their arched necks and gleaming crimson crowns (tan) project a striking graphic silhouette, their jet-black secondary feathers fanning outward like flared kimono sleeves against their snow-white plumage. In the soft-focus background, another crane stands in quiet witness across the frozen field. The photograph captures an electrifying, elemental sensory experience: the piercing, clarion bugle of their call echoing across sub-zero wetlands, steam condensing instantly into mist from open beaks, the dry rustle of wind-ruffled plumage, the blinding glare of winter light reflected off fresh powder, and the sharp, freezing bite of northern air settled over the marsh. Captured in Kushiro-shi, Hokkaido, by photographer Toru Kona, this scene celebrates Japan’s most sacred avian icon in its ancestral winter sanctuary. Known to the indigenous Ainu people as Sarurun Kamuy (God of the Marsh), the red-crowned crane (Grus japonensis) has long endured as a cornerstone of Japanese cultural iconography, symbolizing longevity, good fortune, and marital fidelity due to its lifelong pair-bonding. From Heian-period court textiles and Edo-period gold leaf screens (byōbu) by masters like Ogata Kōrin to modern heraldry and ceremonial origami, the crane’s posture is woven into the nation's visual heritage. Once feared extinct in Japan during the early twentieth century, a small resident population was rediscovered in the un-freezing spring-fed reed beds of Kushiro Marsh and saved through decades of local community winter-feeding programs.

The grammatical 'colon' and the anatomical 'colon' are not etymologically related. The anatomical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kolon’ which means “large intestine.” The grammatical 'colon' comes from the Greek ‘kōlon’ which means “limb.” Both are a means to an end.

American Kestrel (Falco sparverius) male for #BirdoftheDay theme #BlueSkies. #birds #Florida
A horizontal image of a male American Kestrel standing on the right of a large pine branch with body facing left, back and tail towards viewer and head looking back in profile. The smallest falcon in North American, but arguably one of the prettiest, the kestrel has a slate blue cap and wings and two black slashes on the face, one on each side is coming down to the shoulder from the dark eyes. What can be seen of the breast and underside are white with some black spots. There is slate blue on the wing and warm rusty color on the back, accented with black spots and crescents. The tail is in shadow and dark. The bird has bright yellow/orange lores and feet. The background sky, above and below the branch, is clear blue.

Yabusame’ mounted archery, an old warrior tradition in Japan
Frozen in mid-gallop against a soft blur of dust and greenery, a Yabusame archer rises with fluid grace from the saddle of a white charger, drawing a towering asymmetrical longbow (yumi) with absolute focus. Clad in traditional Kamakura-period hunting attire (hitatare) patterned in vibrant emerald green and gold brocade, the marksman wears spotted deer-hide chaps (mukabaki) and a wide, black-rimmed hat (igasa) secured beneath the chin. A blunt, turnip-headed wooden arrow (kabura-ya) rests aligned with his steady gaze, held at full draw as horse and rider thunder down the course. The contrast between the muscular power of the white horse, the crisp geometric line of the drawn string, and the fluttering patterned sleeves creates a high-stakes sensory moment: the thundering beat of hooves, the rushing wind, and the held breath before the release.
abusame (流鏑馬) is an ancient Japanese ritual of mounted archery dating back to the late Heian and early Kamakura periods (12th century), codified under Shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo to cultivate samurai discipline, mental focus, and spiritual devotion. Performed as a sacred rite at Shinto shrines, the archer must shoot three wooden targets in rapid succession while galloping down a narrow, two-hundred-meter track. The arrow's bulbous wooden tip—known as a whistle-arrow—produces a high-pitched hum as it cuts through the air, signaling a prayer for peace and driving away evil spirits. The creation of the archer's specialized gear, from the laminated bamboo bow and eagle-feather arrows to hand-woven silk brocades and custom leatherwork, represents a living continuum of monozukuri (artisanal mastery and material craft), where feudal military tradition is preserved as sacred performance art.

Debut of maiko Satohina. Photography by Onidide on Flickr
Captured in elegant profile against a dark, slatted wooden screen, a newly debuting maiko bows gently in her formal ensemble. Her stark white oshiroi makeup coats her face and neck, creating a striking contrast with her jet-black, sculpted coiffure and the deep black field of her formal trailing kimono (hikizuri) decorated with graphic wave and pine motifs. Hair adornments (kanzashi) crown her head, featuring a fluttering silver bira-bira pin over her temple, warm amber-toned tortoiseshell picks, a polished red coral bead, and a scarlet silk kanoko pad tied around the base of her topknot. The delicate curve of her downcast profile, the gleam of metallic ornaments, and the soft red embroidery of her inner collar invoke a intimate sensory atmosphere: the soft rustle of heavy silk layers, the faint fragrance of camellia hair oil, and the quiet reverence of a formal greeting.
Photographed by Onidide, this portrait documents maiko Satohina during her misedashi—the official debut ceremony marking an apprentice's formal entry into Kyoto's traditional hanamachi (flower towns). The milestone demands a highly codified wardrobe, most notably the formal black kuro-hikizuri paired with a heavily embroidered red collar (han'eri) that signifies her junior rank. Her hair is sculpted into the waeshima hairstyle, a specialized traditional coiffure reserved exclusively for formal occasions like debut rites. The assembly of such an ensemble represents the living heritage of Japanese monozukuri (artisanal craft and technical mastery), synthesizing the expertise of traditional hairdressers (kamiyui), silk weavers, yūzen dyers, and metal craftsmen who maintain centuries of material tradition.

Hoshi-wajo standing wooden statue. 11th century, Japan. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction
Carved from a single block of timber, a monk standing in solemn monastic robes reveals a miraculous inner metamorphosis through a deep vertical cleft down the center of his head and face. The wooden flesh of his forehead and nose splits open like a parting curtain, unveiling the calm, serene face of a Bodhisattva emerging from within the mortal shell. In his right hand, raised in a gentle gesture of instruction, and his left hand, holding a slender ritual water vase (suibin), the figure exudes a quiet, poised presence. The aged surface of the sculpture is etched with deep vertical wood grain, tool marks, and age-worn fissures that catch dramatic, directional light, capturing the physical tension between the outer human countenance and the divine radiance hidden within.
Dating to 11th-century Heian-period Japan, this extraordinary wooden sculpture depicts Hōshō Wajō (the Chinese monk Baozhi, 418–514 CE), a renowned Buddhist master of the Southern Liang Dynasty celebrated for his eccentric wisdom and miraculous deeds. According to Japanese Buddhist folklore recorded in collections such as the Konjaku Monogatarishū, when Emperor Wu of Liang sent court painters to capture the monk's portrait, Baozhi used his fingers to rend open the skin of his face, revealing the Eleven-Headed Guanyin (Jūichimen Kannon) beneath to demonstrate that true Buddhahood cannot be captured by superficial physical likeness. Sculpted in the ichiboku-zukuri (single-block wood carving) technique, this work represents a pinnacle of Japanese religious monozukuri (artisanal mastery), translating a literary legend of spiritual transfiguration into a startling, physical masterpiece of sacred art.

Starless Eagle Nebula and The Pillars of Creation - From Rolf Wahl Olsen - flic.kr/p/2nxreCe
www.rolfolsenastrophotography.com/Astrophotography/Nebula...

This image shows the famous Pillars of Creation region of the bright Eagle Nebula (Messier 16) in Serpens.
Constructed from monochrome exposures in two very narrow wavelength bands of ionised Hydrogen and Oxygen, the data has been combined into a colour image to reveal this highly detailed and very dramatic scene. The bright colours are due to emission from the ionised gases, energised by light from nearby stars. The stars were removed during image processing to fully reveal the intricate structure of the nebula. Orange-red nebulosity corresponds to H-Alpha emission, and the blue areas are OIII.
The core area of the nebula was made famous in 1995 as the "Pillars of Creation" by images from the Hubble Space Telescope. The pillars are giant columns of gas and dust, approximately 9 light-years long, that are slowly being eroded away by intense radiation pressure from nearby young stars.
The nebula lies 6000 light-years distant in the Sagittarius arm of our Milky Way galaxy.
