"What the Waters Feel". #poem #poetry #skypoets #blueskypoets #poetsofbluesky #poetrycommunity #writingcommunity
where rocks rear through white foam
I strain to make out what the rapid river says.
           I have no sense
of what the whirling waters feel:
                                                                joy? blank terror?
                                                                      apprehension?
                                                     bubbling belief that soon
                                                            they will achieve nirvana,
                                                                     all desires snuffed out
                                                                              in union with the sea?
    each pint of river
drawn into a glass
can be picked out, be pointed at,
                            be reïdentified —
but pour it back into the flow,
                                                     and it is gone.
                                                     no water’s gone,
                                                     but that pint’s gone.
there’s no “that pint”, in fact,
unless the “that” points back into
                  the past — the inaccessible,
           unalterable, unattainable.
                                                                                            I make no contact
                                                                               with the river’s essence,
                                                                      for it’s far too alien
for me to understand its constant
                                                                             babble:
                                                      “here I go!”?
             …

So sad to see the end of this project to restore salmon to their ancestral waters above Shasta Dam. This project represented hope: hope for a better future for the fish and the tribe. People hand-carried these fish. We can't just drop this. mavensnotebook.com/2026/04/04/c...

Every day is better with otters. Saw some river otters today swimming in a plant / algae covered channel at Yolo Bypass. They kept popping there heads up and I followed them and got some good pics.

Found these mystery objects in the water below the Fair Oaks Bridge during a scuba cleanup dive. Does anyone know what they are? Fish tags of some kind?
Circular silvery tags attached to fabric or thread backing. But what are they?

Bluesky: what are these? We found hundreds of these translucent, membraneous discs on the beach near Jenner. Definitely part of a (formerly) living thing. Jellies? Molluscs?
A mysterious, transparent disc with a blue border rests amid kelp, sand and stones on the beach.

It's #sturgeonsaturday 🌎🧪 The Sacramento River is long, and we don't want to look everywhere for green sturgeon spawners. So we use behavior seen on tags to watch their migration. We can see where they stop traveling fast and start getting down to "business." Then, we just look there.
A plot of river distance vs. travel speed. The travel speed drops after river kilometers 300. Above river kilometers 300 is labeled as "spawning ground"
