Just a note- separatists pitched option 2 to hold a binding referendum as a way to send a message to Ottawa. Many folks jumped on that idea. Which means, no, 24.5% of Albertans do not support separation. The actual number is lower.

What exactly are people such as Kirill Dimitriev, Bibi, Netanyahu, Elon Musk, Marc Andreessen or MBS going to do if and when Trump is replaced by Dems who are happy to go after any of his allies they view as existential threats to US democracy? Sometimes it's better to hedge your bets.

The separation referendum ballot question in Alberta was significant, but the battle over immigration and weakening the (already weak) power of the federal government will be fierce, divisive, and could set up another round of secessionist struggle in the years to come. It won't be pleasant.

The undercard to Smith’s referendum really needs more attention. It’s anti-urban, anti-immigration, absolutely built on the falsehood of modern rural life and ‘the family farm’ and who deserves to have cultural power.

So 8% of Albertans voted to become a country, barely above the noise floor. This should be a final lesson to stop pandering to this non-constituency by humouring the premier’s demand for a national energy program, another economically unsupported federal-funded pipeline, etc

Ottawa did not cause global oil prices to crash. Western Canadians pay the same federal taxes as everyone else. You are not being mistreated. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe says while he’s “glad to see Albertans vote overwhelmingly in favour of remaining in Canada,” the grievances of people in the Prairies need to be addressed.

“There is still work to be done on improving how Western Canada is treated by Ottawa,” Moe said on Tuesday.

“But Canada is worth that effort. Saskatchewan will continue to work with Alberta to make our provinces stronger within a united Canada.”

An independence movement does exist in Saskatchewan, but it’s not nearly as prominent as Alberta’s.

As an American who lived in Europe, I can say that Americans often have a fantasy view of Europe, but for none of those three reasons. I assume "people were mean" is just that waiters didn't ask them every 3 minutes how their food was.

Trump openly siding with Russian aggression, not just rhetorically but now with US policy intervention that boosts the Russian economy and facilitates Russian attacks in Ukraine, appears to have broken a dam. Leaders who held back in an attempt to keep Trump on side are admitting that didn't work.

Yeah there's plenty of genuinely pro Ukraine GOP members of congress and Zelensky knows that, but given Trump's penchant for ignoring congress I doubt anything other than impeachment is going to really help Ukraine. Maybe enough senators will change their minds but I'm still skeptical.

Let's remind ourselves that Alberta's UCP purposefully rigged the system in favour of the separatists. They lowered the threshold to trigger a referendum. They rigged the rules, and they allowed themselves to be bolstered by foreign interference, namely from Russia and the USA.

“Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.”
MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — The bodies of the children all lie here, dumped into this narrow trench hastily dug into the frozen earth of Mariupol to the constant drumbeat of shelling.
There’s 18-month-old Kirill, whose shrapnel wound to the head proved too much for his little toddler’s body. There’s 16-year-old Iliya, whose legs were blown up in an explosion during a soccer game at a school field. There’s the girl no older than 6 who wore the pajamas with cartoon unicorns, among the first of Mariupol’s children to die from a Russian shell.
They are stacked together with dozens of others in this mass grave on the outskirts of the city. A man covered in a bright blue tarp, weighed down by stones at the crumbling curb. A woman wrapped in a red and gold bedsheet, her legs neatly bound at the ankles with a scrap of white fabric. Workers toss the bodies in as fast as they can, because the less time they spend in the open, the better their own chances of survival.

Part of the reason I don’t think fraud in obtaining citizenship should be a basis for voiding citizenship is I have worked in a citizenship application and there is lots of room for a bad actor to draw on ambiguities to claim fraud. Even if those won’t hold up in court, the possibility is chilling.

According to U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia "has been fine on Ukraine" and "hasn't been doing much" to the country it has been attempting to violently conquer for over a decade.

"Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much," Trump told reporters on Oct. 19.Two children were among six people killed in a Russian drone strike on a park in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv Oblast, on Oct. 19, according to updated casualty figures released by Governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

The victims included two girls, aged eight and one, three women aged 28, 34, and 36, and a man around 40 years old, Syniehubov said, adding that at least 15 people were injured, including seven children.

The drone struck the town's central park while many people, including families with children, were there, Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said. He also pointed out that the attack made no military sense.

The name of New Mexico is funny because it's one of those things that you'd think is really simple (oh, it's it used to be part of old Mexico, so we'll call it New Mexico!), but it's much more complex New Mexico as the name for the area predates Mexico by several hundred years!
