The Vanity Fair article does explicitly say the Dutch reverse engineered the Russian hack and then hacked Kushner's phone:
In The Hague, the MIVD hacking team tried to reverse engineer the Russian penetration of Kushner’s iPhone. Kushner owned what was then the latest model, the iPhone X. Released in November 2017, it featured Face ID, a state-of-the-art security feature that Apple had promoted at its launch. The Dutch team had been trying to pick the phone’s door lock, so to speak, when it occurred to them that the Russians may have found an unlocked window to gain entry instead. Their hypothesis was correct. By early 2018, the MIVD had found a vulnerability in the iPhone that gave them access. The security exploit wasn’t perfect, however. Some malware allows a hacker to turn a victim’s phone into a microphone and video camera, turn the phone on or off, and pull and add files. The Dutch solution did not provide that level of access. Instead, when Kushner used the phone, they could see his screen. Almost as soon as they got inside, the intelligence service began capturing every image of Kushner’s screen as he used it, filing their own cache of surveillance on their internal computer servers.

“Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine.”
MARIUPOL, Ukraine (AP) — The bodies of the children all lie here, dumped into this narrow trench hastily dug into the frozen earth of Mariupol to the constant drumbeat of shelling.
There’s 18-month-old Kirill, whose shrapnel wound to the head proved too much for his little toddler’s body. There’s 16-year-old Iliya, whose legs were blown up in an explosion during a soccer game at a school field. There’s the girl no older than 6 who wore the pajamas with cartoon unicorns, among the first of Mariupol’s children to die from a Russian shell.
They are stacked together with dozens of others in this mass grave on the outskirts of the city. A man covered in a bright blue tarp, weighed down by stones at the crumbling curb. A woman wrapped in a red and gold bedsheet, her legs neatly bound at the ankles with a scrap of white fabric. Workers toss the bodies in as fast as they can, because the less time they spend in the open, the better their own chances of survival.

According to U.S. President Donald Trump, Russia "has been fine on Ukraine" and "hasn't been doing much" to the country it has been attempting to violently conquer for over a decade.

"Russia, frankly, has been fine on Ukraine. They haven't been doing much," Trump told reporters on Oct. 19.Two children were among six people killed in a Russian drone strike on a park in Nova Vodolaha, Kharkiv Oblast, on Oct. 19, according to updated casualty figures released by Governor Oleh Syniehubov said.

The victims included two girls, aged eight and one, three women aged 28, 34, and 36, and a man around 40 years old, Syniehubov said, adding that at least 15 people were injured, including seven children.

The drone struck the town's central park while many people, including families with children, were there, Interior Minister Ivan Vyhivskyi said. He also pointed out that the attack made no military sense.

Aside from the robotic logistics and successful combined arms that has allowed Ukraine to succeed in the recent counteroffensive, morale is very important too! kyivindependent.com/inside-opera...
The increased use of UGVs for logistics in the 3rd Army Corps and its attached units means infantry can reach the front line in armored vehicles or on foot, carrying only light backpacks. Reliable logistics also lets support teams deliver small comforts to the front, lifting the morale of infantrymen who may hold the same position for a month.

Orders come in every day. A soldier can order something in the morning and be drinking a soda in the gray zone by midnight. "It's like ordering pizza," Aibolit says.

Like this is not a "close call" CNN
The intelligence report, circulated across the US military this spring in the midst of the war with Iran, immediately set off alarm bells: A Chinese ship in the Middle East was transporting components of a nuclear weapons program.

The US military swung into action with plans to intercept the vessel, according to four sources familiar with the episode. According to two of the sources, armed members of the US military were preparing to board the ship. Military planes were in the air, one of those sources and another source familiar with the incident said.

It was only just before the planned operation that officials dug deeper into the report put together by a special operations command analyst and found it had been generated with the help of artificial intelligence (AI) — and that a chatbot the analyst had used inaccurately identified the material the ship was carrying. CNN was not able to learn what the misidentified cargo was.

It is 100% the responsibility of the US to take the steps required to fix the relationship, and they really have no grounds to complain about any steps Canada takes to build new relationships, especially with states that are supposed to also be US allies. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...

Cannot say I am surprised that Canada's former UN ambassador has a clearer view of the futility of negotiations at the moment than people more narrowly focused on trade and business www.cbc.ca/news/livesto...
Bob Rae, Canada's former ambassador to the UN, says the Trump administration's ramped-up trash-talk about Canada and rhetoric about making the country the 51st state in recent weeks show the tensions go far beyond trade.

"Look, we know what we're up against. Trump has ambitions that go way beyond trade, which is what makes it difficult to get their country to refocus on the trade agreement," he told CBC News today.

Rae said the recent comments from Trump and his cabinet are a sign of "profound disrespect" against the Canadian government and Canada as a whole, and make it difficult to believe the two countries can sit down and hammer out a trade deal right now.

"And I think that's something Canadians know now and we understand it better: We are dealing with people who don't believe we should exist," Rae said.

"And that should, I think, bring us all to ground as we come to grips with the challenge we're facing."

Again, what is the point of negotiating if the US clearly has no interest in sticking to its word or using trade as anything other than a weapon aimed at subjugation? You can't negotiate if there is no mechanism to ensure a deal actually holds. www.cbc.ca/news/livesto...
While many Canadians are cheering on the approach, there are others concerned it just won't work.

"Mr. Trump doesn't really care about Congress," international trade lawyer Mark Warner told me. "I just don't understand the strategy."

He argues Canada should get back to negotiations, but worries Canada is waiting for the Trump administration to climb down completely — something he says will not happen.

"We're one-tenth the size of the United States .… When you get into a tit-for-tat war, it is going to be felt more on the Canadian side than the American side."

This is honestly a pretty disrespectful response! It's not fantastical to think Trump might order an attack on Canada, he clearly came very close with Greenland. It's been 10 years, Americans need to stop assuming the once fantastical is still impossible. nationalnewswatch.com/2026/09/02/c...
Admiral Samuel Paparo, the head of U.S. Pacific Command, was asked by a reporter at a news conference in Victoria whether he would ever follow an order from President Donald Trump to invade Canada.

The admiral quickly dismissed the question.

“I find that scenario to be absolutely and utterly preposterous. I follow the orders of the commander-in-chief but that is a needlessly emotional question,” he replied to the journalist.

“Would you ask me please, also, what my attack plans are for the Martians?”

Paparo said he follows the president's orders but Canada remains a "close" and "indispensable" ally to the U.S.

Trump has repeatedly floated the idea of annexing Canada and making it a U.S. state as he wages his ongoing trade war. But Trump also has said it’s “highly unlikely” he would ever use military force to annex Canada.

And now we have one possible 2028 Dem presidential candidate basically confirming that tariffs are likely here to stay, and I doubt he is the only one to think this. Just another reason to pursue a permanent diversification away from the US, not just until 2029. www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps...
Will Democrats maintain tariff policies?

During his tenure, former Democratic U.S. president Joe Biden expanded on protectionist trade policies from Trump’s first term in office, by keeping most of Trump’s tariffs on China and even announced new ones.

When asked directly by Kapelos whether Canadians can expect tariffs to be reversed under Democratic leadership, Newsom said he “can’t guarantee that but I can guarantee you nothing like this.”

“Having targeted tariff policy is an industrial policy. This is not an industrial policy what Trump’s doing across the board on hockey sticks. This is a tantrum being played out,” Newsom said.

And this is of course the other side of the problem: there is actually no guarantee that the Democrats will try to fully restore the alliance or go back to free trade. www.thestar.com/opinion/cont...
The sooner Canadian businesses understand that the assumptions which governed continental integration for decades no longer hold, the better. Even if Democrats retake Congress or the White House, it is far from certain they will abandon tariffs and economic coercion now that these tools have been normalized. The rhetoric may change; the actions may not.

This is the right approach. The US has thoroughly demonstrated they are not negotiating in good faith, and there is no sense in reengaging until it is clear that has changed. www.cbc.ca/news/livesto...
Recent comments from U.S. Vice-President JD Vance and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent about restarting trade talks come after U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy said Sunday that Canada "will come to the negotiating table" because the country will have no other choice in the face of "devastating tariffs."

Speaking in Quebec, Carney said Ottawa would be willing to talk if Washington changed tack.

"When the Americans go to the negotiating table first with the right attitude toward our industry and a true partnership, of course we'll come to the negotiating table," the prime minister said.

He said he wouldn't accept the attitude that "Canada is a subsidiary of the United States," or that the country should be disadvantaged relative to the U.S.

"And that's before you get to constraints on our ability to do what the rest of the world wants," he said, "which is to sign trade deals with Canada. And that's before the very fundamental issues on culture."

No sovereign country with any degree of choice would agree to terms like these. Makes it clear the US intent remains only about subjugating Canada, and it's very good we walked away. www.cbc.ca/news/world/l...
The source told CBC News the Canadian government was expected to agree to apply steel and aluminum tariffs on all of its trading partners at a rate comparable to what the U.S. has applied (50 per cent).

However, countries that have a free trade agreement with Canada would be treated differently. In those cases, Canada would have to establish a tariff rate quota, meaning a certain amount of product would be allowed into the country at a lowered tariff rate.

Ah yes Trump is the only problem in the US-Canada relationship and it will go back to normal when he is gone 🙄 Both GOP and independent voters are souring on Canada due to the president's rhetoric and that is likely to outlive him. www.thecanadianpressnews.ca/national/tru...
And the Trump effect isn't limited to elected officials. Recent polling shows that while most Americans continue to hold positive opinions of Canada, Republicans are souring on the relationship.

Gallup polling published in March shows Canada's favourable rating among Republicans has fallen 23 points, from 85 per cent in 2025 to 62 per cent this year.

Eighty per cent of political independents polled by Gallup viewed Canada favourably — down nine points from a year ago but similar to 2024 levels — while 95 per cent of Democrats had a positive view of the country.

Once again, it would be great if Carney would follow through on this kind of rhetoric with policies that actually align with what he says. Repeatedly states that the US is trying to annex Canada, then turns around and makes harmful concessions. www.cbc.ca/news/politic...
Carney didn't pass up an opportunity to use Charlottetown's history as the gathering spot for the Fathers of Confederation to make that point, remarking it was a time when "trade barriers were holding back economic growth, major infrastructure projects increasingly required co-operation across jurisdictions, and the threat of American invasion loomed large.

"Plus ça change," he said to the premiers. "What the Fathers of our Confederation suspected then, we know acutely today: that our unity is our greatest strength, and that our destiny is in our hands."

I suspect part of the reason so many Americans get defensive when Canada retaliates in the trade war is that they have been repeatedly told that it is Americans who pay the tariffs, not Canadians, which totally ignores the economic impact of reduced exports on Canadian businesses.

That cost Canadians nothing.

It meant an extra tax on Americans.

Tariffs hurt the Canadian economy and Canadians too, not just Americans who have to pay more! I wish Americans would realize they are not the only victims of Trump's trade wars. www.ctvnews.ca/world/trumps...
Trump’s tariff campaign has upended North America’s integrated trade relationship and rocked the once-reliable supply chains. According to the Democrats’ Joint Economic Committee, since Trump began using tariffs, the average household in the United States is paying an additional C$1,400 to C$2,400 annually.

The cost of living has also increased for those living north of the border. According to RBC, Canadian households are absorbing an estimated $2,300 to $2,700 in annual costs since tariffs came into effect in early 2025.

Economists are estimating a reduction in Canada’s GDP by 1.5 per cent to two per cent. And since January 2025, Canada has also lost roughly 61,000 manufacturing jobs.

That should obviously be very different from attacking a refinery that supplies fuel for the military. While it also supplies civilian fuel, it can still be a lawful target if it makes an effective military contribution, and civilian harm is proportional to destroying that effect, not if it is zero.

But behind the scenes, his move toward war grew inexorably, fueled by allies like Mr. Netanyahu who pushed the president to strike a decisive blow against Iran’s theocratic government; and by Mr. Trump’s own confidence after the successful U.S. operation that toppled the Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro in January.

Today marks 4 years of the full-scale war of aggression against Ukraine by Russia, following 8 years of invasion and occupation in Crimea and Donbas. Ukraine remains free and unbroken, and with our support the Russian war machine can be defeated and a just peace achieved.

Ah yes, the tariff-necessitating national security threat of the Swiss president being mean

As the US supreme court prepares to rule on whether Donald Trump does have the power to impose tariffs on foreign imports, to address a self-declared economic emergency, the president confirmed in an interview broadcast on Tuesday that he sets tariff rates based, in part, on his own feelings about the leaders of other nations.

Speaking to the Fox host Larry Kudlow, who was the director of the National Economic Council during Trump’s first term, Trump repeated a story he told at the World Economic Forum in Davos last month about why he raised tariffs on imports from Switzerland because the country’s female leader irritated him in a phone call.

“I had an incident with a very nice country, Switzerland,” Trump began. “I put on a 30% tariff, which is very low… and I got an emergency call from, I believe the prime minister of Switzerland.” The president was referring to. call from Switzerland’s president at the time, Karin Keller-Sutter.

“She was very aggressive, but nice, but very aggressive. ‘Sir, we are small country. We can’t do this, we can’t do this, we are a sm-’, I couldn’t get her off the phone,” Trump recalled.

“I said, ‘You may be a small country, but we have a $42 billion deficit with you,’ Trump recalled saying. In fact, the US goods trade deficit with Switzerland was $38.3 billion in 2024; but the US also had a services trade surplus of $29.7 billion with the country the same year.

“‘No, no, we are small country’, again and again and again,” Trump said Keller-Sutter, whose name he never used, told him. “I couldn’t get her off the phone. So it was a 30%, and I didn’t really like the way she talked to us, and so, instead of giving her a reduction, I raised it to 39%.”"
