If we replaced all property taxes with land value tax, the majority of households would come out ahead. And we'd have a housing system that rewards building instead of punishing it.
Chart: replacing property tax with 2% residential land value tax increases most households’ after-tax incomes.

Absolutely this. I find advertising in the old sense -- magazine ads, TV commercials etc -- an irritant but an acceptable one. Internet "ads" -- which are functionally just malware -- are not the same thing and I will use any trick I can to avoid them and not feel bad about it.

Don't tax the house, tax the ground. Why penalize home improvements? Shifting to LVT lets us lower taxes on buildings and work, making it cheaper to build and stay in your home.
Comparison of Property Tax vs Land Value Tax showing how LVT encourages building improvements instead of penalizing them.

Today I found out that Umberto Eco crafted a version of this meme in the 1980s…
Beware the
alibi of photocopies ! Photocopies are indis-
pensable instruments. They allow you to keep with you a text you have already read in the library, and to take home a text you have not read yet. But a set of photocopies can become an alibi. A student makes hundreds of pages of photocopies and takes them home, and the manual labor he exercises in doing so gives him the impression that he possesses the work. Owning the photocopies exempts the student from actually reading them. This sort of vertigo of accumulation, a neocapitalism of information, happens to many. Defend yourself from this trap: as soon as you have the photocopy, read it and annotate it immediately. If you are not in a great hurry, do not photocopy something new before you own (that is, before you have read and annotated) the previous set of photocopies. There are many things that I do not know because I photocopied a text and then relaxed as if I had read it.

A lot of rich guys want you to think that the bar on the right is always going to be bigger than the bar on the left.
Vertical bar chart titled "Norwegian wealth tax revenue, change from 2021 to 2024," in billions of Norwegian kroner (BNOK), nominal. Subtitle: top rate 0.85% to 1.1% and stock valuation discount cut from 2022.

Two bars. "Growth with no emigration": 13.71 BNOK, a tall bar. "Lost to reform-driven emigration": 0.65 BNOK, a barely visible stub, about one-twenty-first the height.

Notes: Growth includes the rate and valuation changes and wealth growth. Net of tax that emigrants still paid, the reform-driven loss is 0.49 BNOK.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment. www.nber.org/papers/w35854
Taxing Entrepreneurial Wealth: Evidence from
Norway, 2021-2025
Marius A. K. Ring
WORKING PAPER 35854|
DOl 10.3386/w35854
ISSUE DATE October 2026
Whether imposing higher taxes on business owners adversely affects business activity by constraining investment and inducing capitalist flight is a central question in the ongoing debate on how to tax the ultra wealthy. To shed new light, I exploit a series of related Norwegian reforms during 2021-2024 that increased dividend tax rates, removed migration-related capital gains tax loopholes, and nearly doubled the effective marginal tax rate on business wealth. These reforms spurred international debate and, allegedly, an "exodus" of Norwegian billionaires (Financial Times,
2023). While I document clear effects on migration, these responses are concentrated among the top 0.1% of the wealth distribution and mostly confined to 2022 and 2023. My results indicate that at most 100 individuals left due to the reforms. I find no evidence of significant outmigration or reduced inflows of startup founders or inventors. I estimate that absent any outmigration, wealth tax revenues would have increased by 75% from 2021 to 2024. Reform-driven outmigration lowers the revenue gain to 71.5%. My findings further show that outmigrating owners' firms remain economically active and do not reduce investment. In a broader set of analyses, I examine whether business outcomes are affected, regardless of whether owners outmigrate, since firms may reduce investment both due to liquidity constraints or distortions to owners' savings decisions. I compare firms owned by Norwegian individuals subject to the wealth tax with firms owned by foreigners and other tax-exempt entities. By merging historical ownership data from Orbis with the Norwegian shareholder register, I perform these analyses on both Norwegian and foreign-domiciled firms.
Across settings, I find no evidence that Norwegian-owned firms pay out more dividends or invest less after the reforms,…

Wait. This is the infamous "Roko's Basilisk"!? I assumed it would be less... stupid. This is just Pascal's Wager written by someone who read and didn't understand NEUROMANCER oh right that's all these idiots do. Sigh.
If you're not familiar with it, Roko's Basilisk, in broad terms, supposes that at some point in the future a sentient and omnipotent artificial intelligence could arise, and that this intelligence could then decide to punish all those who had anticipated its possible arrival and either worked to prevent it or refused to participate in its development. In that case, the wise course of action for people now, who are aware of even the theoretical possibility of this scenario, would be to work in good faith to bring this AI into existence, lest they put themselves or their descendants in its future crosshairs.

Private jets account for 16% of FAA operations but contribute just 0.6% of the taxes that fund it. Does that mean we should raise private jet taxes 25-fold to make up the difference? Why, yes, in fact Gift link: www.bloomberg.com/opinion/arti...
Table: Private Air Travel Is a Carbon Bomb

Of the 3 quickest ways to travel from NYC to DC, private jets produce by far the most CO2 emissions per passenger.

Rail - 5.2 kg per passenger or 14.3 g per passenger/km
Commercial air - 44.38 kg per passenger or 128.62 g per passenger/km
Private air - 538.5 kg per passenger or 1500 g per passenger/km
