Four in ten healthcare workers worldwide who were infected with SARS-CoV-2 during the pandemic developed long covid, and a quarter still had symptoms after a year, a report has found.

The report by the NHS Race and Health Observatory examined numerous global studies to assess the medium term and long term effects of the disease on healthcare workers. It looked at the demographic, clinical, occupational, and sociocultural factors associated with long covid risk, particularly focusing on ethnicity, migration status, and vaccination history.

The longitudinal, mixed methods analysis included a systematic review of global research studies, survey data from 11 513 UK healthcare workers, and qualitative interviews with 42 healthcare workers, their managers, and support networks.

The analysis, produced by the observatory in collaboration with University College London (UCL) and the universities of Leicester and Nottingham,1 examined data from 6481 healthcare workers across 28 …

This explains why I get migraines and fatigue from reading: www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti... Hypoperfusion during cognitive load may reflect a combination of: systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, neuroimmune activation, & acute resource depletion. → microvascular dysfunction

This explains why I get migraines and fatigue from reading:

https://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2666956026000899?via%3Dihub

The hypoperfusion observed during task performance may reflect a combination of underlying physiological mechanisms, such as systemic inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, neuroimmune activation, and acute resource depletion, induced by cognitive load (Lersy et al., 2022). Our findings support the hypothesis that reduced CBF is associated with underlying microvascular dysfunction and blood-brain barrier (BBB) dysfunction. Zhao et al. (2025) demonstrated that increased microvascular pulsatility, measured by pCASl, was strongly correlated with aging, suggesting that altered perfusion dynamics can serve as a biomarker of microvascular pathology (Zhao et al., 2025). Furthermore, reduced CBF measured by pCASL has been shown to correlate with cognitive impairment in individuals at risk for small vessel disease, supporting its role as an indicator of microvascular dysfunction (Jann et al., 2021). Consistent with this, increased BBB permeability in conjunction with reduced CBF has been observed in stroke-affected regions in a pilot study (Mouchtouris et al., 2024). Additional evidence comes from Tanashyan et al., who used a modified Stroop test combined with BOLD fMRI and reported a greater activation in supramarginal gyri, posterior cingulate cortex, opercular parts of the precentral gyri, and bilateral posterior cerebellar lobes in patients, interpreted as compensatory recruitment(Tanashyan et al., 2024). In contrast, Rubin et al. conducted a cross-sectional MRI study using WEPCAST to assess BBB integrity in individuals with PCC and found evidence of long-term increased permeability, while CBF and brain volume remained unchanged (Rubin et al., 2025).

Why get the flu vaccine if you can still get infected? Yes, you can still get the flu, but the vaccine helps keep you out of the hospital. There's just a lot of not understanding what the vaccine's really supposed to do.
Then the other thing I sometimes see is that [individuals] will say they got the vaccine before, but then they ended up getting the flu. So, I have another prepared remark where we talk about that, saying yes, you can still get the flu, but the vaccine helps keep you out of the hospital. An estimated one in eight cancer cases worldwide may be caused by infections—many of which are preventable with treatment or vaccines, according to new research.

In a study published on Monday in the Lancet Oncology, researchers estimate that infections were responsible for approximately 2.3 million cancer cases, or about 12 percent of diagnoses, worldwide in 2024.

Helicobacter pylori bacteria and human papillomavirus (HPV) combined accounted for more than an estimated 1.5 million cancer cases, the analysis found. An estimated 360,000 cancer cases were linked to hepatitis B infections, and 260,000 cases were caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.

Graphic shows a series of pie charts, each representing one type of cancer, scaled according to how many new cases of that cancer were diagnosed in 2024. Colored areas of the pie charts indicate how many of those cases were associated with infections, with each infection shown in a different color.
