You should check out Ivan Schwab's (UC Davis) work on it. He did win an IgNobel for it.

Unconventional thinking, and raw talent will risk being replaced by mediocrity in the name of efficiency. Unsure if it's going to be a feature or a bug in the future

The human potential is being ignored increasingly, be it AI triaging job applicants, grant applicants, before a peer/ human views. Have we become so lazy that in the name of optimization, we depend on models to filter the essential but mundane. Or have we become reduced to keywords?

For context, this is one hundred ninety-two thousand, five-year biomedical research grants. More than five years of complete funding for the entirety of the NIH for cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s, blindness, epilepsy, infectious diseases, etc… An entire generation of scientists.

Who do I know at UCSF or Berkeley that would be interested in taking a high school student to shadow for lab work? Kid is interested in bioscience, and lives fine detail work.

Likewise, there are conceptual differences between (a) percentage (a part of), (b) percentile (a ranking of), and (c) percentage points (relative difference between percentages).

*No context*: while in academia, to all new students joining my lab, I would carry a tradition from my grad lab - talk about fold change vs fold difference (percentage) to understand directionality in movement of values. Just saying, perhaps this needs to be done also to adults with authority.

How do cells sense electric fields? How quickly can they respond? We show, in a collaboration with Nathan Belliveau and Julie Theriot, that this is limited by the physics of how proteins diffuse. Here's the @bppbseminar.bsky.social seminar I gave on this work: www.youtube.com/watch?v=5TDX...

And where exactly are the supposed to haul their belongings to for the holidays? Universities are no longer for 'education'. The obscene amount of endowments need to be used to stripped away. It's not used for fees, faculty/grad student/postdoc salary/stipend, or lab infrastructure or scholarships.
