How I feel every time I try to get important information at work
It's a screenshot of an Insta post from digitalboss_duo. The post reads, "Hi Stacy, You replied to a request with a question about scope. Scope is a private matter between the deadline and God. Please proceed without knowing. Your boss, Bernard"

I will now observe a moment of silence for all of the fights started in my life because the neurotypicals asked me why I did something and I, like a total newbie, tried to tell them.

ICYMI, this account that is live-blogging The Lord of the Rings (based on Tolkien’s calendar in the appendices) is just getting started again with Frodo journey. It’s a good follow if you want to see random appearances of hobbits and such on your feed.

This Teams message from my boss fried my autistic brain: "You know, it doesn't take much effort to [fix something minor in a video I published]." Was it a direction? A reprimand? I knew it wasn't a neutral observation but it was phrased so much like one that my brain wouldn't rule it out.

For me, this goes for both good and bad things. Praising me for [good thing]? I definitely thought that just what we were all doing and I DO NOT want the attention for it. Misbehaving for attention? I probably forgot there were other people around at all. I am mortified.

The number of times I have been accused of doing things for attention as an autistic person. You are never going to believe this but I honestly thought I was doing something unremarkable. I am as horrified as anyone else to find myself Being Perceived.

Has any autistic person found a way to be around people who always speak fearfully or live in a scarcity mindset and not absorb it themselves? My parents are undiagnosed NDs and my whole life all of their advice was about fearing people's judgement & doing whatever it took to avoid it.

So I struggle with emotional awareness and processing (alexithymia) and ALSO with random negative memories popping into my head and making me feel the old feelings all over again. THEORY: The memories are my brain trying to help me access and process the emotions I'm currently not dealing with.

A friend once told me that my whole family waves their feet like cat's tails when they're talking while seated and now I can't unsee it. Legs crossed, one foot suspended in the air, flexing and pointing and circling as if to emphasize the points they're making as they talk.

I voted in the ridiculous separation referendum my province is holding. Sent in my mail-in ballot and everything. I don't know who needs to see this but it's ok if the attestation form is missing your postal code. I called and asked, you can write it in or leave it blank.

I keep repeating this fun fact to people while they stare at me with feigned interest: “helicopter” is a compound word, but probably not in the way you think! it’s made up of “helico” as in, “spiral,” from the Greek “helix” and “pter” as in “wing,” like in pterodactyl!!

DO YOU REMEMBER the absolute bloodbath on Autism Twitter when we found the post about the boyfriend who didn't want to eat the chocolate cake with vanilla icing his girlfriend made him for his birthday?? I think he ate one slice and then politely pointed out it wasn't what he wanted/asked for.

A paradox of autistic socializing in normal society is that I often found people hated the fact that I was masking (hiding my autism) more than they hated whatever I was hiding. They didn't know what I was hiding. They just despised the awkwardness and hesitance that came with hiding it.

If you ask your neurodivergent friend about something and they give you a slight pause before saying a phrase along the lines of "Ok so..." That is them warning you that you're about to get hit by a storm of hyper fixation based knowledge and you better brace yourself or sit back and enjoy it.

I sat in a work training session where we were learning how to interview users about their experience and shared that my grocery store shopping list is sorted by the physical location of the items in the store so that I can work my way down the list, walking from right to left through the store.

I sorted all of my clothes into two categories: Can Wear in Public and CANNOT WEAR IN PUBLIC. Most of my clothes are folded in piles on a shelf in my closet. One shelf per garment type: pants/trousers, shirts, shorts. On the left is the Inside Only pile and on the right is the Safe For Public.

I tried to explain my outsider vibes, half-in half-out situation to someone using My Fair Lady as a metaphor and they hadn't seen it and it really bummed me out because if you have seen it there's nothing more to say. It completely captures the feeling of being able to fit in but never really belong

Everything about condo associations should terrify autistic people. They are messy, they run on informal power, they attract bullies. But: They also have bylaws.

I just do not think that platitude can resonate with autistic people. Statistically speaking we encounter a lot of straight up meanness. It is a real factor in our lives.

Fibre arts is what I point to when anyone says "we didn't have autism 80 years ago". Just go chat with the Spinners, Dyers and Weavers guild for an hour and come back to me. Not a single neurotypical among them, with their madder potions and their rare breed wool and spending years on one garment.

It's an Instagram Threads post from @elcronk that reads: "You’re autistic. You grow up struggling to communicate. Life is hard. Human behaviour becomes a special interest. You start therapy. You learn about boundaries. You gain emotional intelligence. You grow. You overtake the neurotypicals around you. They are now threatened when you communicate your needs and boundaries calmly, openly and honestly. Most do not have the skills to reciprocate. You retreat from society and become a bog witch."

I watch tv shows to feel my feelings. I have alexithymia, its basically emotional colour blindness. I struggle to identify my feelings, let alone feel them. But tv shows are so good at evoking emotion. And I realized, that's what I use them for.

As the first autistic person to be formally diagnosed in my family, I realized something: I am the living incarnation of the painfully weird family my parents have spent their lives trying to distance themselves from. They found religion, found corporate work, and slowly sanded off every rough edge

I don't know if it's because I'm autistic or because I'm getting older but I had to cut out caffeine and now I'm having to really watch my social media use. Not because my feeds are a bummer, but because I keep hyperfocusing on them.

LLMs don't need to be as terrible for the environment as they are. They didn't need to be packaged as chatbots, designed to be addictive, and rolled out with no safety protocols. They didn't need to be marketed as a replacement for human labour. These were all choices made by their American owners.

I've been reading lots of advice on surviving workplaces and one thing that has been really important for me as an autistic person is learning to balance warmth and competence. Vanessa Van Edwards writes about these as opposite ends of a spectrum of how people present in the workplace.

You know how neurodivergent people identify with witches - living on the edge of their community, versed in arcane knowledge, feared but also respected? Today I realized I have basically that relationship with my neighbours but it's due to my autistic knowledge of condo rules & city bylaws.

Being an autistic consultant is wild because I really want to return to the predictability and consistency of an in-house role but I can't take those jobs anymore because when I stay in the same place too long, I become someone's favourite resource to exploit and end up overworked and underpaid.

“What a beautiful universe, hon" says a telescope as gazes upon an aurora borealis. “It really is”, responds the telescope's partner, who it turns out is not a telescope, but a microscope. Hands full of algae, she wades waist deep in a disgusting swamp, amazed by the heavenly microscopic life all around them.

I don't know who needs to hear this but you gotta watch how much time you spend empathizing with people who do not value you. Other people can think what they want. That's their business. It might be worth reflecting on, it might not. But you are not supposed to talk to yourself like that.

You know how old people marvel at technologies we take for granted? and tell stories about the times before the technology existed? When I get old, if we fix the world, I'm going to be like that but with a normal functioning society. Just constantly amazed that things work and are good.

I read that a 20-minute walk in nature can help folks with ADHD as much as a dose of stimulant medication. This isn't about whether that's true. It just brought up a memory of my parents, undiagnosed ADHDers, and their lifelong habit of going for walks (and urging everyone else to do the same)
