I love this poem. You can hear the teenage "ugh!" eye rolls all the way from the ancient countryside.

Perhaps my fave part of my article is that I opened it with this banger of a quote from the Illini in 1876.
The rare art products of the old World, although zealously guarded from American vandalism, are being abundantly transported in representative copies and casts, and the age no doubt is rapidly approaching when foreigners will no longer cry out against the supremely disgusting taste of Americans.

Yeah I’ve got my PERM now (after 11 months of processing) so am moving towards adjustment of status for green card so… thats good. The constant background noise and anxiety on top of just the “regular” admin of it all is just… a lot. Oh and did I mention it will cost me thousands of dollars. Sigh.

A leaving thought… (with so much acknowledgment of how many “privilege points” I have in my corner)… Being an immigrant is fucking exhausting right now.

Amusing things discovered in the archives today: in the early 1900s the university had admins titled simply “Dean of Men” and “Dean of Women”. (The Dean of Women was, of course, a man).

Yes every woman has been harassed, many assaulted. But every woman has also experienced invisible loss from moments she avoided harassment. She felt a space becoming unsafe, so she left, while men stayed on. And in leaving, she lost: opportunities, experiences, learning, promotions, even simply fun.

i worry that men think being A Good Guy is dramatically and heroically intervening on behalf of an endangered woman and then being publicly rewarded on a grand scale when actually being A Good Guy is just usually saying, “hey man that’s not funny” or “wow that’s fucked up” and there is no reward

I am tired of having to pretend that the value of studying my discipline solely rests on the "marketable skills" we teach. Sometimes things are just worth knowing and doing because they make your life bigger and richer.
