Ah, Kings Cross in the late 90s where two of us would always walk our friend back to her halls each evening as it was a regular occurrence that at least one man would assume we must be prostitutes because we were female. Which bit of the Met did he work in?!?

between 15,000 and 20,000 jobs in UK universities are actively at risk of being cut, on top of the tens of thousands already lost. 50% of UK universities are actively cutting staff. Solidarity with anyone losing their job at the altar of corporate greed, but "some jobs are real jobs" indeed.

The brutal reality of universities' suppression of wages (in KPMG's report for DfE on cost of undergraduate provision in England) assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/media/6aabfa...
Table 1 – Cost increases since the last study by cost type
Actual % increase
between 2016-17 and
2019 study cost groupings
2023-24 weighted
average unit cost
Staff costs 14%
Non-pay costs 46%
Indirect departmental costs -24%
Centrally allocated indirect costs 29%
Estates costs 40%
Sustainability adjustment -2%

Source: Analysis of Data Returns
Table 1 shows that costs have not increased equally in the time between the two costing studies. Non-pay costs have increased slightly ahead of inflation and estates costs have increased in line with inflation. Universities have managed staff costs significantly below inflation, increasing only by 14% compared to the 41.2% increase in RPIX. By contrast, indirect departmental costs have reduced by 24%, but this may be due to differences in the universities participating in the 2019 and this study. The movement in MSI is reflective of changes in financial performance rather than any inflationary impact.

Fundamentally growing up with modern media does not teach good practice. In fact a lot of modern media obfuscates things e.g. you can get away with saving everything to an amorphous mess if it's just the latest essay you did, but it's disastrous on long projects with lots of other people

I agree they need to learn to deal with analogue media, but the "digital native" idea also turns out to be problematic. We're increasingly finding that students have no idea how to name & organise digital files, & they still don't know how to structure data.

My dad was a personnel manager in the 80s & his factory was closed. He insisted on having 1:1 meetings with every single one of the 300 employees to personally give them the news (even though they all knew about it) & once he'd talked to all of them, made himself redundant too.

That's so odd, and such an odd decision to have made. We're lucky enough to have four for historical reasons and I wish more churches had that many! It makes everything feel so much more manageable when you have others to share the worry.

British higher education is in crisis. We moved from an elite university system to mass higher education within a single lifetime. That brought huge benefits writes Stephen McNair - but without a settled answer to a fundamental question, what do we really want from our oldest institutions?

What do we really want from our universities?
British universities are under attack from multiple directions. After decades of expansion is it time to ask what we want from higher education?

The loss of search structure is devastating for knowledge retrieval. I teach basic lit searching and it's always felt like a really core transferable skill for students to know boolean operators and "exact phrase searching" and now google, microsoft etc have just killed it to force us to use slopAI.

Looking up their energy certificate, looks like they've added the air pump and solar since they were assessed, but it's the uninsulated stone walls that really don't help them or their neighbours plus the assumed poorly insulated roof rooms.
