I’ve started keeping my bike helmet on, or very visible, when I go into local shops just because I want them to know some of their customers do come by bike.

Actually it's a problem to ride your bike when it's too nice out. Mainly because then you have to force yourself to stop riding and go inside and get other things done which is terrible.

I always hesitate to lean too heavily into New York City exceptionalism. Lots of cities around the world are great and many of them do plenty of things better than us. But this @anildash.com essay gets at what I do think is exceptional about New York, especially at this particular moment in time.

Matt, channeling Baudelaire (complimentary)
From Charles Baudelaire, “The Bad Glazier”:

At last he appeared. With great curiosity I examined all of his panes and finally said: "What?
You have no colored glass? No pinks, no reds, no blues, no magical panes? No panes of the gods?
Impudent creature! You sell your wares to the poor, and yet you have no panes that are able to make life beautiful!" And I abruptly pushed him,
groaning and stumbling, out to the stairs.
I then went out on my balcony and grabbed a small flowerpot; when the man reappeared at the door | let my engine of war fall right on the back of his pack, the reverberations from the impact sending him reeling. Falling on his back he managed to break all of his poor, portable merchandise with a crash akin to lightning striking a crystal palace!
And intoxicated by madness | screamed furiously:
"Make life beautiful! Make life beautiful!"

You have to make making culture a priority. mattdpearce.substack.com/p/how-should...
What do we lose when software is our greatest cultural export? Doesn't it bother you that Al has made the signs in your neighborhood uglier and removed the quirks of human idiosyncrasy in the handwritten note stuck in the storefront window? Wasn't it better that people could choose whether to see the silly Wile E. Coyote movie instead of leaving a finished project in the vault to die in tax write-off purgatory?
Weren't you amazed to learn that the Circe scene in Christopher Nolan's "Odyssey" was shot completely in-camera, with prosthetics and no CGI? Aren't there different, more difficult stories out there that also deserve to get told, and to also get told well?
Don't people work hard enough and suffer too much not to deserve, in their short lives, to encounter beautiful and well made things?

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

For your convenience, the Pride and Prejudice live-posting super-thread 📚
A drawing of Elizabeth Bennet, a lovely young woman with her long hair tied up nearly under a ribbon and wearing what is most likely a neo-classically inspired dress, looking pensive, two letters in her hand. Meanwhile Darcy, a handsome but stern-looking fellow, looks longingly at her. Also there is me, a little gremlin in big round glasses, skulking about in the background and hoping that they kiss.

The accompanying text reads “Trung reads Pride and Prejudice for the first time, somehow.”

A nihilistic sheep, who, like so many other sheep, just wants to watch the world burn, staring at me insouciantly, moments after it has set fire to a large portion of the United Kingdom.
