Overheard in the airport... Young guy: "Why do you go to Vegas every year?" Old fella: "To gamble, of course"

Dear American brewers - or brewers from everywhere actually - fuck off with laser etched nucleation points in your glassware.

Just learnt that Utah has a draft ABV limit of 5%...and that is freaking awesome! If a brewer can't make flavorful, delicious beer that is under 5% ABV, then I question their chops.

I am in Utah this week for the first time. I think I am having religious PTSD from the Pentecotal church conference in the same building as the geoscience conference I am at - memories of a former life. Thank goodness for beer.

$15.50 (that's £11.57/€13.49) for a 20oz pour of a 5% kellerbier that is decent but not earth-shattering? Craft beer is becoming a fucking rip off.

It feels like pointing out that a krug is not a stein is the beer communicator equivalent of the arrival of pumpkin spice latte - just an indicator of the arrival of autumn/Fall. Clearly, no one outside the bubble is listening, not even the breweries themselves.

Saw a quote about poverty as a result of poor financial decisions and then conflated it with "the cycle of debt", which is interesting because viewing debt as poverty, or vice versa, makes Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, and Haiti "richer" than the entirety of the G7 in terms of debt as a %age of GDP.

Starting to think we need a hierarchy of beer competitions.

Personal heresy, if you've never had altbier in Düsseldorf, kölsch in Köln, plzeňskè pivo in Plzeň, best bitter in England, dry Irish stout in Ireland, etc, etc, then you shouldn't be judging those categories in competitions.

This week, at the beach, I read @adrianmckinty.bsky.social's "The Cold Cold Ground", it was superb! Having grown up in the west of Scotland there were instantly recogiseable characters and themes. Though we never had the overt violence of The Troubles, it was always bubbling under the surface. 1/5

Absolutely thrilled that Spain won the World Cup, mainly because it meant Argentina, and Messi, lost. Messi could have been the greatest player in history had he won the league in 3 of the 4 big leagues in Europe, instead he ran off to France then the MLS. Ronaldo is the GOAT, says an #LFC fan.

Been toying with the notion of parochialism in beer lately and how it differs from a notion of local. Really not sure where my brain is going with this, but I keep turning the idea over in my head. I kind of think booze is ultimately internationalist, and everything "local" is a facet of the global

I currently have a witbier and pale mild on tap, I have an ordinary bitter in primary, and I want to brew again this weekend - but have no idea what to brew, other than it be top fermented (I don't have time to commit to a decoction mash this weekend). What to brew???
