Didn't take long for the vultures to arrive. There's clearly a big industry out there that preys on authors. And I can see why, because an author with a new book is very, very emotionally ready to accept help with marketing. What I love about this one is the book doesn't even exist.
Screenshot of an email reading:

"Dear Lars,

What caught my attention about Traditional Norwegian Beer Brewing is the way it preserves the history of a brewing tradition through both careful research and the stories of the communities that have kept these practices alive. I was especially intrigued by the attention to farmhouse brewing, kveik yeast, local techniques, and the connection between brewing methods and regional culture.

I’m part of World Reading in München, Germany. We discover authors and books from around the world, giving preference to voices that are rarely heard. Our discussions often explore cultural traditions, local history, food and drink, craftsmanship, and the ways books can preserve knowledge that might otherwise be overlooked.

For our September 30 gathering, I’d love to feature Traditional Norwegian Beer Brewing as an Author Spotlight. I think it could lead to an engaging discussion about Norwegian farmhouse brewing, kveik, traditional craftsmanship, regional communities, and how brewing practices can reveal something about the history and culture of a place.

If you'd like, we can simply introduce your book to the group, or you could share a short message with our readers or join us briefly for an informal conversation. There is no pressure to participate beyond whatever feels comfortable for you.

Would you be interested in having Traditional Norwegian Beer Brewing featured at our September 30 book club gathering?

Warm regards,

World Reading
München, Germany"

The White House has posted the US-Denmark agreement about Greenland, and I had a quick read-through. Basically the US gets nothing they didn't already have. So they created years of noise, and drove Eur. allies away in order to get ... nothing at all. Jaw-dropping incompetence. My summary of text:
Screenshot of text reading: "There's basically nothing in it until you get to IV. Defense Areas, where:

1. The US already had this
2. The US already had this
3. The US already had this
4. The US promises to use Greenlandic contractors where possible
V. The US already had this

VI. Has three subpoints all numbered ".i", all of which state rights the US already had

VII. The US is allowed to raise concerns about the security of Greenland, and if it does Denmark will discuss those with the US

VIII. Just words

IX. Non-NATO members not allowed military presense on Greenland

X. Restrictions on what states that are not NATO or EU members can do on Greenland

XI. Agreement has no end date"

Yes, sure ... totally. That would definitely be enough to produce lots of top-quality porter. Apparently this story is an attempt to explain the name of Barley Lake, in southwest Ireland, near Glengarriff.
Screenshot of old newspaper text reading "The legend of the name 'Barley Lake' is that a local sportsman in bygone days, deploring the deterioration of the Irish porter, emptied a shipload of barley into the lake, and lay down at the end where the Oowenacahina flows out, taking sups to sample the brew. The Cahina has therefore another name, meaning 'Froth off the Barley'"

For a scientific paper on the use of herbs in farmhouse ale the editors are making me look up the vernacular names used in the sources in national botanical databases to make sure the names are interpreted correctly. With 1074 sources in 11 languages that takes a *little* bit of work.
A screenshot of a spreadsheet, showing rows 250-280. First column: code identifying source. Second column: country. Third: language. Fourth: internal herb codes. Fifth: vernacular names in the source, in this case in Estonian. Sixth: status. Seventh: comments.

Names like porss, sookail, tubakas, köömen, and kaelusid occur. Apparently "kaelusid" couldn't be identified, but it doesn't matter because it's under "Others", anyway. And one mistake in translation was identified.

I've always wondered why warm-fermented beer was called "top-fermented" while lager beer (cold-fermented) was called "bottom-fermented". Neither fermentation happens at the top or the bottom, so the terminology makes absolutely zero sense. I was today years old when I finally figured it out. 🧵

That feeling when you've been agonizing for weeks over how to rewrite a chapter. Plan one outline, discard it, then agonize some more. Then, when you have an opening of two days, you sit down to plan a third outline, start typing, and find you have a completed draft well before lunch.

Our cabin is in the middle of a grazing area for sheep and cows, so we get them right up against the wall sometimes. The lambs are very curious, sniff and nibble at everything. Blue plastic over drying firewood, green tarpaulin, metal hinges, wood cover over gas pipe, ... Really everything.
A chair is on a porch with a fence around it. Right next to the porch, maybe 20cm off, is a ewe with her two lambs. Beyond them lots of grass, and forest in the background.

Porter famously evolved out of "three threads", a strong brown beer that was mixed with weaker beer to reduce taxes. Well, Belgium before that had drijdraad (three threads), a strong brown beer mixed with weaker beer. That's fascinating. lostbeers.com/drijdraad-a-...

Drijdraad: a lost strong brown beer (and sometimes weak coffee)
Drijdraad was 'the best variety of Mechelen brown beer.' And in the Land of Waas it means: strong beer, also bland coffee.' Okay, tell me more?

Lovely piece by @larsga on traditional smoky ale and beer. They use wood fires to dry the malt. This is how pre industrial ales could have tasted. Worth reading. They use hops and I specially like the description of the cows eagerness to eat the spent grain. Even when its smoky and mixed with hops.
