I love living on the border of First Hill and Pioneer Square and taking a ferry from SeaTac Airport to West Seattle. It's too bad about what happened to Lake Union though.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

We just hit 1 million Fremont Bridge bike trips so far this year
Data through September 29. Sometime Monday evening (September 28), somebody rolled across the Fremont Bridge and registered the one millionth bike or scooter trip so far this year. The old bike counter display had both a daily count and a thermometer-style counter that filled up over the course of the year. That thermometer maxed out at one million. When the city first installed the counter with sponsorship from Cascade Bicycle Club, one million was seen as an aspirational number. Seattle just hit that figure before October. Last year, the bridge didn't reach the 1 million mark until mid-December.

(To be clear, I saw there's a tax bill and that the city said there's not a structural issue with the wall, but it doesn't seem like there's knowledge as to whether there's a different structural issue, or if that tax bill is related to the closures.)

Is it correct to say that the tenants have been pretty ambiguous by what "building issues" means? I.e. we have no idea if it's landlord issues, structural issues, maintenance, pests, tax payments, or whatever? Or have some things been ruled out?

8 hours later and the best SDOT could do was add a few cones. If these were in the car lanes do you think they'd still be there?

Who do you want to have the final say on street safety projects in historic districts: 1) The Seattle Department of Transportation’s Chief Transportation Safety Officer Or 2) Historic boards SDOT could consult historic boards to ensure a continuity of character without giving them a veto on safety

Route 8’s eastbound on-time performance is on track to exceed 80% in September 2026. This will be the first time eastbound Route 8 trips meet Metro’s 80% on-time goal in at least 7 years.
On time performance graph for eastbound Route 8 from Metro. September 2026 is the highest month in the past 7 years with 80.1% of trips on time.

I wouldn't really put it on cyclists. The markings are only on the street, not the sidewalk. And someone biking in the "wrong" direction wouldn't see the markings until after they've crossed. I wouldn't expect someone to know an unspoken norm that only exists on that bridge.

CheeToS @unclecheetos.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Both sides are permitted, but in my experience, the social norm is for bikes to use the east side to travel north and vice versa. The bike lanes that connect to the sidewalk on both sides kind of reinforce that, too.

I collected metrics this week on my commute home from Westlake on the new @fixthel8.bsky.social bus lane. Going from Westlake to Capitol Hill Station reliably takes less than 10 minutes now! One trip to CHS took less than 7. It's a game-changer.
A data table displaying trip start/end times for trips between Westlake and 19th, along with time between bus stops, dwell time at stops, and Google estimates for the same trip using a car.

I’m not a “fire them all” kind of person but the traffic engineers who got this so dramatically wrong need to fundamentally reexamine their assumptions.

I took some numbers: Start: 5:12 PM Westlake to Fairview: 0:32 Fairview to Stewart: 0:34 Stewart to Bway: 5:42 (From Westlake: 8:55) Bway to 19th: 4:48 End: 5:26 PM (From Westlake: 14:13) Google's estimate for the same trip: 10 minutes

The red- and yellow- shafted ones can interbreed and create "intergrade" variations with orange feathers, too! This one's a red-shafted though despite the orangeish hue.

The principles underlying Vision Zero in Seattle are excellent but the culture change hasn't happened and so SDOT is continuing to build and rebuild deadly streets. Here is my 🧵thread of actions that can help Vision Zero back on track.

Some things I've learned about legislative advocacy, and I think my record speaks for itself. 1. Start by asking for everything you want. Stop preemptively negotiating against yourself. The process of passing the bill will whittle it down. Why started with a whittled down product?

Pretty helpful. I like being able to quickly see what the orgs I trust think. My 1 wishlist item is a feature that would let me filter which orgs are included in the bar graph on the home page. (I still want to be able to see other orgs when I open the candidate details, but not influence the graph)

There's some interest in the conduit being installed on the corner of Boren/Lenora/Denny seen in the distance in your first photo. It's not in the detailed PDF of the street changes! There's speculation about it being an arm for an "estimated time to I-5" sign or something.

Really seems like the bike lane could use some demarcation. I wonder how difficult it would be for @seattledot.bsky.social to put a bike decal on the road right where the planter lane begins.

What's the deal with the "exempt vehicles only" parking signs there? Are they allowed to block the left car lane there? Seems confusing in any case given the lack of labeling of the bike lane.

Too many people have been killed on Seattle’s streets in recent weeks. These tragedies are preventable. Tell Seattle leaders to improve intersection safety, require side guards on large trucks, and prioritize Vision Zero. Take Action: actionnetwork.org/letters/plea...
Side-by-side diagram comparing an intersection before and after daylighting. The “Before Daylighting” illustration shows cars parked close to a crosswalk, blocking a driver’s view of people crossing and reducing visibility. The “After Daylighting” illustration removes parking spaces near the corner and replaces them with a striped no-parking zone, creating a clear line of sight between drivers, pedestrians, and people biking. The diagrams highlight how daylighting improves visibility and safety at intersectionsillustrating a bicycle safety side guard. A person riding a bicycle is shown alongside the truck, with a red panel labeled “Side Guard” covering the space between the front and rear wheels to help prevent cyclists from being pulled underneath the vehicle. The diagram notes a maximum 13.8-inch ground clearance beneath the side guard and indicates the truck bed height is typically 50 inches.

Would be especially interesting if it offered a way to eliminate the gas station driveway on Broadway (leaving Pike intact). Many people have been injured there in collisions.

I don't understand why parking enforcement everywhere tries to treat their job as some sort of friendly negotiation to do whatever they can to avoid giving the car driver a ticket. Just literally write the ticket. No questions, no negotiation, no extralegal grace period... just write the ticket. 🫠

This is the space between parked cars and same direction traffic with a small car hugging the centerline. Imagine it’s a box truck and there is traffic in the other lane. And they decided to pass you, on a bike. Tell me they”gave space” and it was a “freak accident”. Fuck all the way off.
