Amazon's own balance sheet presents the most compelling evidence that we are stuck in the Enshittocene, the era in which everything is turning into a pile of shit, because the worst ideas of the worst people now make the most money. 1/
Hieronymus Bosch's 'The Conjuror,' a painting depicting a medieval con artist playing a shell game for an audience of astonished peasant rubes. The image has been altered: the conman now has Jeff Bezos's grinning head, and the mouths of all the peasants have been replaced with inverted Amazon 'Smile' logos, so they are now frowning.

Why was this subsidy to the fossil fuel industry not disclosed during the announcement? Is it because it's all kinds of questionable? "EDC's financing of the gas project reflects a broader shift toward federal support for Canada's fossil fuel industry." #CdnPoli
The federal Crown corporation, which is backstopped by Canadian taxpayers, lent the money on July 2 – the same day that Pembina, Morgan Stanley Infrastructure Partners and Kineticor Asset Management reached a final investment decision on the $4.6-billion project. Its involvement has not been previously reported.

The Crown corporation is not financing the data centre itself, only the power plant. The plant is classified as Category A – a project that is “likely to have significant adverse environmental and social effects.”

Despite the gas plant, known as Greenlight, being predicted to generate up to 5.65 million tonnes of CO2 per year when it is fully built out, it has not been classified as an oil and gas project by Export Development Canada (EDC). The gas plant was not required to undergo a comprehensive impact assessment by the federal government.

Instead, EDC classifies it as a utilities project that “enables export capacity in data processing and digital services.”

xAI's unpermitted turbine emissions would dwarf federal permit thresholds
Potential annual emissions, in short tons, from 30 unpermitted turbines at xAI's Southaven, MS facility

Chart: Potential emissions at 80% load
Nitrogen oxide: 2,474
Carbon monoxide: 4,065
A vertical dotted line indicates the Federal permit threshold.

Note: Federal permit threshold of 100 short tons/year is based on emissions at 100% capacity. Emissions shown at 80% capacity reflect the lower end of typical operating levels for gas turbines, according to the EPA.

He said the facility would be on par with the top 25 U.S. gas plants for nitrogen oxide emissions, citing EPA data for actual emissions.
