Does the gender and sexual identity shape public support for prospective judges? In POQ, Stone & Yang find that Americans across all partisan backgrounds penalize LGBTQ judicial nominees, with transgender nominees facing the largest penalties. Read now: doi.org/10.1093/poq/...

How do everyday people in authoritarian regimes think about politics? And how do the public's attitudes shape the way autocrats govern? Tony Zirui Yang and I have a new chapter in the Oxford Handbook of Authoritarian Politics that reviews academic research on these questions: doi.org/10.1093/oxfo...

I know extreme cases got publicized a lot. But as someone with an unprivileged passport (though important enough that they still want us), visiting Europe as a tourist is significantly more painful than visiting the US in every possible way.

Equally concerning as the headlines about censorship is the multiple conversations I had recently about self-censoring our research due to political climate. It’s a tricky question with no easy answer. But perhaps we are not real autocracies yet, and we play a part in preventing that from happening.

It’s been a while since the word “Democracy” doesn’t mean anything anymore among ordinary people in authoritarian regimes. (Just a term to describe what they like or don’t like.) It seems like it is becoming increasingly the case in democracies as well.
