Happens to be one of my favorite essays I've written! And since I've written it, I've found more and more examples of works working against the underlying privileging of "center" over "periphery.

To me, when an essay gets this much attention over a long period of time it means the author struck on an untapped, deep vein of cultural discussion and analysis. There's more to be said about the relationship between imperialism and western fantasy and I look forward to reading those discussions.

I come back to this book all the time when I think about the climate crisis. Let's pretend there was a technology that could fix it. Why would Thiel/Musk/Andreesen/Zuck/etc deploy it? They already have everything they want. If anything they'd exploit the technology for increased leverage!
