I agree with the 2026 Vancouver Police Department that you need to centre data when talking about crime and perceptions, and do it through long-term trends instead of short term fluctuations or individual stats. But that’s not how the 2020-2022 VPD talked about crime and perceptions.

IMO, really speaks to the need for a positive vision. I know optimism is cringe, but, jesus. Cringe is a lot better than this shit. I know a lot of people are skeptical of abundance. But something like that is a pretty good starting point. People want stuff. How to we make is sustainable?

Some of those the dooming has been rooted in real stuff. Yeah, climate change is a big problem! But persistent dooming over a quarter century really darkens people's views. Many seem to adopt all of it. Well, all institutions are corrupt and we're all fucked anyways just leads to dark places.

I think we underrated how corrosive constant dooming for this entire century has been. We literally started it with a widespread meme that computers were all going to melt down. Then we had 9/11, the Iraq war, global financial crisis, covid, climate change, etc. Just constant negative news flow.

I am sort of constantly baffled by critics (which I am, more than not!) who don't feel like they have to stay apprised of what these things can actually do. not least you're going to come off like a fool, but also it's not at all like knowing what they can do obviates the criticisms of them?

Yeah. I am sympathetic to the idea that a resource project like this can be an investment towards royalties. (I.e. revenue that is fewer steps removed from a payoff than a less-specialized piece of infrastructure.) But not sold.

I won’t belabour this because I’ve written about it before, but the part of Carney’s pipeline pivot that I find impossible to justify is the government taking on the demand risk.

Though of course (because ppl will misread that) each individual project is part of a globe's worth of projects that collectively pose a massive loss.

Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
This really is the crux of it, I think. Individually, we can have more to benefit from *individualized, Canadian* fossil fuel production than to lose, because of the concentration of those benefits close to the source. (Plus the benefits also include social programs downstream of gov't revenues)

economically, exports are important because they literally bring money into a country (and allow for specialization) that then helps supports social programs and the like. domestic stuff is useful but you don't get the same economic kick

Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
I'm skeptical of all of that, fwiw. But it's definitely a story that can be pitched. Opponents need their own alternative story of a different path.
020
Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
this is definitely one of the reasons. Though even in BC, proximity is not necessarily the main thing, but value/analysis of emissions.
010
Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
So why isn't that pitch resonating? That's the challenge. (Couple challenges to point out. First, lots are saying not to develop resources. Second, solar and wind aren't really exportable - because other markets (US) produce more of that. Third, lots of pushback against hydro projects too.)

Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
my analysis, related to other polling too: people reallllly want economic development, and a vision a prosperous future They're willing to accept significant non-monetary trade-offs. If this is so, then anti-pipeline folks need a persuasive pitch for increased prosperity w/o resource development.

Tyler Olsen @tyolsen.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
If you oppose a new pipeline, it is worth asking oneself why the majority of Canadians now exist on the other side. One cannot change minds without considering and understanding why people believe differently from oneself. same goes for a lot of other issues.

In general, conservatives hate it when people are oversensitive about words. This is a case where they get to be the victim and force the left kinda to play by the sensitivity rules it wants others to live by. Which maybe is fair, but also they don't want to live by sensitivity rules so....

My kid's school renamed its local teams from "The Flames" a couple years after Lytton burned down. But the name had survived various other Lillooet fires before. Because folks didn't really care that much that a simple name coincided with a scary event.
