this is excellent
stigmatizing Rowling’s weaponization of childhood not only requires personal withdrawal for most people, it necessitates something much more difficult: being a giant fucking killjoy. You should tell people discussing the show that you’re not watching it, and why, and you should let yourself openly cringe at your sister-in-law’s Harry Potter tote bag, and you should bring up unprompted that the onslaught of legislation against trans people makes you sad and angry, presuming it does, and you should do this because, not despite, the fact that it will make you look annoying as hell and may make everyone present uncomfortable. (You probably won’t even get the kudos of looking like a cool ally, because you’re still ultimately talking about Harry Potter. Sorry about that.)

The media relentlessly promotes the narrative that progressives are too mean to anti-vaxxers and we must bring them around with compassion. This isn't true and isn't helping. The more public sympathy you show them, the more empowered they are in their beliefs. www.statnews.com/2026/08/19/s...

The fundraising texts you delete are working on someone. It’s infuriating and heartbreaking. An 85yo in Ohio gave more than double the value of his home. A 91yo in an Indianapolis senior facility gave 25K times. The DCCC/DSCC don’t just tolerate the spammers who exploit seniors. They take part.

And basically that's the central problem with the review, it's not at all interested in where and how The Odyssey succeeds or fails as a film

tynan @tynan.unimportantbird.com · 27/07/2026
I think that final sentence about Nolan getting "the general public reading again" is so revealing. Because, even if that's true, it feels like a very secondary consequence to Nolan's actual goal which is getting people back into movie theaters again

tynan @tynan.unimportantbird.com · 27/07/2026
It's not a good review, but it's also not even a good rant! It pulls its punches in the final paragraph when it should be bringing down the hammer! Unforgivable
"Despite all this, the release of The Odyssey is still an event to celebrate. In what we are told is the streaming era, this epic is bringing audiences back to cinemas. In what we are told is a time of declining literacy and the ‘death of the humanities’, translations of The Odyssey, including mine, are flying off the shelves. Some of those who buy the book or show up in cinemas to watch Tom Holland may go on to study ancient Greek. Perhaps the film will persuade a few college administrators not to cut their literature, language and history departments. Nolan, who studied English at University College London – where students still study The Odyssey as a first year ‘foundational text’ – is doing his best to get the general public reading again, and I am grateful."

I say this as someone who has been way less hot on Nolan's film than a lot of people I know but: That review from Emily Wilson is genuinely awful. We're talking a step or two away from cinema sins level criticism here

I really love this reading. I've been trying to work through a (somewhat related?) thesis in my head about the extent to which Spider-Man can be interpreted as a figure for comics (and specifically attempts to discipline and/control the medium) within the context of the Spiderverse films

I'm hesitant to declare that an individual text I'm predisposed to hate signals the downfall of civilization (cause that feels like right-wing nonsense most of the time) but Angry Birds 3 starring MrBeast sure seems like it could only be the product of a dying empire

Panel 1: Shenne (this is how I'll reference the girl version of Shen from now on) is making a comically pouty crybaby hands with her hands raised and saying "oooo I can't even draw a stick figure"

Panel 2: She's now doing raptor hands and continuing to make the pouty face in profile view, saying "ooooo if I draw something, it's gonna be BAD!"

Panel 3: Shenne faces you directly, the front of her body shaded apart from her eyes and teeth, which form a disgusted expression as she says "WHO THE HELL CARES?? DON'T YOU HAVE SOMETHING YOU WANNA SAY TO THE WORLD???"

Panel 4: Shenne, still with a disgusted expression, says "here, loser" and throws a pencil at you.

Solrad kindly let me ramble at length about truth and fiction in the context of Joe Sacco's latest book. give it a read!
I want to be careful here: The Once and Future Riot is not some nihilistic post-truth diatribe that declares reality unknowable or unimportant. Sacco still believes in the processes of journalism, as flawed as they are; he dedicates the book to “the hardworking rural journalists of India” and praises the work of multiple local reporters in the acknowledgements, including his guide Piyush. But Sacco doesn’t want you to forget that they — and he — are constantly being gaslit about the circumstances of the riot. The book puts its readers in the same uncomfortable position as the journalists: Like Sacco, you can never be completely sure who is telling the truth and whether it’s the whole truth. It’s an artistic strategy that forces readers to question whether the violent scenes that Sacco illustrates are, in fact, distortions of memory.

Panel 2: momo behind his table. There’s a coffee pot and a pink cup of coffee on it. Text reads “pour myself a little coffee”

Panel 3: he’s in a chair behind the table with an opened laptop and a glass of water. It says “check my little emails”

Panel 4: we see he left his house. Door still a little bit open. Text: “ignore them a little bit” as momo gleefully goes to play outside rather than answering his work duties

Long past time for any left-of-center person still actively using twitter to admit that it melts your brain. Platner should erase any lingering doubt. Twitter Platner supporters (who ran the gamut of left-of-center ideologies) assured everyone they were the normal ones and it blew up horribly.
