One of the things Covid has made really clear is how many people are functionally unable to deal with what is.

It's not harmless. It's not "just an innocent thing" to be fooled by AI. You NEED to be able to discern and differentiate reality. You NEED to know how the world works on a basic level. Because fooling you with baby animals and flowers is just the start of something much worse.

“AI will replace movies. I can make my own version of Star Wars where I’m the hero and Obi-Wan doesn’t die.” The problem is we’ve allowed a society where adult men can say things like this without being shunned from the village to starve as a pitiful outcast.

Great Washington Post nostalgia study. Adults think U.S. society was historically nicest and comfiest—most moral and close-knit, families happiest—whenever they happened to be little kids, and culture (music, movies, TV, fashion, sports, food) best whenever they were adolescents. wapo.st/3WXd9xS

Any time the media wants to quit believing all the horseshit that OpenAI is shoveling, that'd be amazing. A computer cannot be "playful," it does not have "moods." It will not "sing" or "write poetry." It does nothing but return a probabilistic outcome based on what it's told. That is IT.

I kept digging into that AI company behind Sports Illustrated's fake writers. Turns out it's created tons more fake writers across the web, sometimes for surprisingly huge media clients. And then things get even wilder... For @futurism.bsky.social // futurism.com/advon-ai-con...

i gotta admit that i do find it sort of interesting that chatGPT or whatever can be, like, 40% accurate at summarizing a news article. it is interesting! it would also be interesting if a horse would do arithmetic correctly 40% of the time, but that doesn't mean I'd give the horse a bookkeeping job

Comic.

SEO shit flooding every search engine is making me straight up turn into the fucking joker. Decades of curating a massive, powerful collection of all the world's knowledge drowned out by shitheads vying for that 3-cent ad revenue click. The most extreme example of "boring dystopia" out there.

90 minutes helps, but it's still amazing how easily it establishes the world and gives all the leads (even Carol, who was meant to die until test audiences rated her highly) a great spotlight: Benton's punch, Susan with the cancer patient, Doug with the abusive mom, Greene's pep talk to Carter, etc

Use of generative AI is only inevitable because people with money want you to believe that it's inevitable. It's a lie they need you to both believe and pre-appease because then they can get away with anything -- and make more money in the process. Please resist their mythologizing on this front.

Seriously, what is the non-fraud use case for this technology? Is there a single thing this could be used for that's good? It would have to be extremely good and important because the main thing it's going to do is enable industrial scale fraud

The generative AI discourse is sincerely insane, it's exactly as if the entire food sector were scrambling to see who could add the most poison to their products. THESE FUCKING THINGS GENERATE FAKE INFORMATION, THAT'S WHAT THEY DO, YOU'RE TRYING TO REPLACE REAL INFORMATION WITH FAKE INFORMATION.

The older I get the more I hate hearing the “never give up no matter what!!” type of advice. Actually, giving up can be great (for certain things). Knowing your limits, having the flexibility to change paths, and learning when to say “no” are all underrated skills.

I'm buying blu-rays like crazy. Not just because the kind of movies I like aren't available to stream this side of the pond (no Criterion channel, no TCM), but also because I physically want to own them. There's just no alternative if you love films. www.theguardian.com/film/2024/ma...

I don’t think it can be emphasized enough that large language models were never intended to do math or know facts; literally all they do is attempt to sound like the text they’re given, which may or may not include math or facts. They don’t do logic or fact checking — they’re just not built for that

Our culture has real trouble grasping that we can't bring back what it felt like to see The Prisoner/Ghostbusters/Star Wars the first time by doing them again, because the thing that made them compelling is that they were different. We can only feel that feeling again by making more new things.
