“The President may be brought low this fall not by the Democrats who would crawl over broken glass to defeat him but by the very voters who sent him back to the White House in the first place. Iran, it seems, may finally have done what Jan 6 and all the rest of Trump’s countless misdeeds could not.”

Nearly 7 months of the Iran war, 6 months since regime change failed, 3 months since the failed MOU, and somehow still the conventional wisdom is that the war will be over soon, end smoothly and immediately restore commerce, and it's up to Trump when. It's not. The situation is out of his control.

Diesel, gasoline, potash, etc. are physical things. Millions of tons of the stuff has to move from some locations to various other locations, facilitated by infrastructure that takes a while to develop. This isn't a video game. You can't just drag a resource bar and quickly shift where stuff goes.

Remember when the US government had economists and supported free markets? That was better. And say what you will about Herbert Hoover, but at least when his govt intervened to curb trade—making things worse—they were responding to an unprecedented economic crisis, not a war of choice they started.

Many appalled seeing such murderous threats in the UN of all places, and they have a point, but don't miss that these extreme threats are most of America's strategy to get concessions from Iran, it has repeatedly failed for months, and the big idea out of the White House is to... say more threats.

Does Trump "have a clear plan for handing the situation in Iran?" Americans saying yes went from 40% around the start, to 33%, and now 25%. Terrible numbers (deservedly so). For reference: Support for GW Bush on the Iraq war began over 70% by some measures, and fell to ~45% by the end of 2003.

Trump at the UN inadvertently showing the value of credibility. He’s bluffed so many times that his extreme threats win no concessions and barely even get a reaction. Even if people are scared by it, he reneges and fails to follow through so often that no one thinks giving in could be worth it.

Pete Hegseth's obsession with dead and wounded has led him to manipulate the KIA and wounded numbers and to fail to report deaths in the Iran War. The Telegraph already reported how the spouses of war dead were being told that they wouldn't get war death benefits. This is positively perverse.

When authoritarian regimes collapse, their leaders experience symbolic deaths, largely through the destruction & removal of monuments that they've built to glorify themselves and affirm their power. Sometimes called "iconoclasm," who gets a statue or monument is always a symbolic struggle for power.

Acceptance of lesser evils is consciously used in conditioning the government officials as well
