It turns out that protecting hate speech did not create the conditions to protect other kinds of speech; instead, it protected hate and allowed hate movements to take over all the institutions of that might have defended the rest of us.

Just tried watching Ezra Klein’s latest NYT podcast episode on how the U.S. got to this point where vaccines are so politicized. It’s pretty clear that Klein and his guests—David Wallace Wells and Rachael Bedard—really do not understand why/how the political right turned on vaccines.

It is not realistic or sustainable for every single government program to constantly promote itself to the public. The clear villain in the DOGE immiseration campaign is the right. We don't need to play into their attacks by implying that we deserve it.

The core argument of the book is that the US refused to consider economic indicators but the exact opposite is true — and the main reason our response was so bad! Trump was obsessed with keeping the economy going so he never issued a national lockdown order and pushed for reopening far too soon.

A reminder with the government shutdown looming that 85% of federal government workers *don't* live in the DC area. Also, according to OPM, federal government workers only make up ~9% of the local working population. These are the workers who will lose their paychecks. 👇🏻
Pie chart showing 85.3% of federal employees work outside of the DC metro area, with text that reads

Percentage of Total Workforce by Location
It is a common misperception that the majority of federal employees work in the Washington, DC metropolitan area when in fact 85 percent of the federal workforce is outside of the DC region.

via Partnership for Public ServiceMap showing federal workers as a share of metro area workforce courtesy of The Washington Post and sourced from data in the Census and the US Office of Personnel Management. Areas with more than federal workers making up more than the share of the local metro area workforce than the DC area (8.8%) include California-Lexington Park, MD; Susanville, CA; Warner Robbins, GA; Bremerton-Silverdale-Port Orchard, WA; Fort Leonard Wood, MO; Vicksburg, MS; Ozark, AL; Muskogee, OK; St. Marys, GA; Altus, OK; Clarksburg, WV; Del Rio, TX; New Bern, NC; and McAlester, OK.
