Sucks that the only major party in the UK to support trans rights is also absurdly antisemitic. Very glad we Americans have the Democrats.

We have a problem in British history if an article like this can be written/published without mentioning Edward’s expulsion of Jews from England in 1290 or the coin-clipping persecutions of the 1280s. Anglo-Jewish history IS English history. If your history books don’t reflect that, rewrite them.

I found this charter by searching for references to swords (as you do). It preserves a donation to a monastery but also the events that led to it, including the murder of one brother and kidnap of another. Did he get released? (spoiler alert! I think so!) alicehicklin.co.uk/2026/10/02/f...

I see discussions of using AI to restore inscriptions or papyri, presumably by using brute force to assemble parallels. I assume this could also work for classical art history, i.e. dating vases by style (vibes or Morellian). But can AI do good philology ? I.e. offer brilliant emendations to ms ? 1/

Women couldn't be outlawed in 13th-century England because they were never put in law. Instead, women accused of crimes were ordered to be waived if they failed to appear at trial. The consequence of waivery was the same as outlawry's: execution (often immediately and without trial). 🧵1/4
A woman in blue at the top of a castle is striking a man in red on the head with her sword. He seems to fall from the ladder he was climbing as is it enters his skull. The woman has a look on her face that says "Don't mess with me."

Medieval Hunting Deaths: A Thread Hunting could be very dangerous (not just for animals) in the Middle Ages. Accidents happened and everyone from kings and earls to lowly peasants could be killed by a stray arrow, a hanging branch or a wild animal defending itself. 🧵7
A man in blue awkwardly holds a bow in front of him. He appears to have misfired the arrow, which is up near his face and facing the wrong way.

I have always hated stumbling stones, mainly because Jewish gravestones have been reused in paving and building in many parts of the world and it reminds me deeply of that disrespect, but this is a cynical move to erase Holocaust remembrance against the wishes of survivors and victims’ families

How to do with books, especially bibles, when you live in a material world? Well, William Hogarth of 18th century fame reminds us of the typical re-using (of bindings). In this case, the leather binding is re-used for a shoe sole. #bookhistory #booksky
A detail from William Hogarth, A Rake's Progress, Plate 1, from around 1735, showing a bound bible and the leather cover with a hole that looks like a shoe. William Hogarth, A Rake's Progress, Plate 1.

Addendum, since I now worry the original post was a bit unclear: the icon looks like a *print* that was colored via hand painting, not a strictly painted icon: see basira.library.upenn.edu/documents/2495. For #MosaicMonday, a colossal discovery. This is the Great #Mosaic, which I visited last Tuesday beneath the #BathsofTrajan in #Rome. Though fragmentary, this wall mosaic almost defies comprehension due to its quality and vastness. Let's have a look. #AncientBluesky 🏺🧵
HALL OF THE GREAT MOSAIC, 64-98 CE. MUSEO DELLE TERME DI TRAIANO

A steep downward perspective into a subterranean space beneath heavy brick vaulting. A vast vertical wall dominates the centre, covered in the remains of a monumental mosaic. This hall measures 10 by 15 metres and is 12 metres tall. The ground level has not yet been excavated, and the lower three metres, still buried, were originally faced with marble slabs. At the centre of the long wall, part of a rectangular niche is visible, which must once have contained a statue. It is far too large to be part of a private domus and is built on lands expropriated by Nero for the Domus Aurea, whose main Oppian pavilion is nearby. The gigantic size and high quality of the surviving mosaic suggest an imperial commission, but of what? And was it a Neronian building or a Flavian or Domitianic one? At the very bottom right edge, a modern blue metal railing provides a sense of the staggering scale.
