It's ridiculous to claim that a trap placed on a pole is intended to trap grey squirrels. If a pole is being used as a bird table an advantage taking squirrel is likely to climb that pole. A trap placed on such a pole will capture far more birds than any squirrels attracted to such a pole.

Eusebius said Constantine was a Christian. Because Jesus sponsored his victory over Maxentius. Whose head was then paraded on a pike into Rome. Some Christians may prefer a more pacific version of their faith, but it’s ahistorical not to recognise how many wars have been fought under that flag.

1. #MedievalSky, grab a lifejacket and a seasickness bag, we’re casting off on a thread about the Norman invasion fleet in 1066! 960 years ago, the Normans landed at Pevensey and established a base at the Roman shore fort which was already succumbing to erosion from the sea on its south side. 1/20

An amazing glimpse into Mesolithic everyday life: this more than 7,500-year-old ring was made from heather roots, carefully rolled up and prepared for later use. It was discovered at the settlement of Motala/Sweden, where the same material was used for fish traps. Dating 5750–5550 BC. 🧵1/2 📷me

I've finally sourced enough acorns to bring the Jays to the camera regularly. However in the mind of the Jay, not all acorns are equal. The largest green ones are taken promptly but there's a careful inspection regime after that, with a high rejection rate of the suboptimal. #Corvids #OakTrees 🦉🌿

As reported #OTD in 1926, 100 years ago they were burning HG Wells' 'Outline of History' in Kentucky: "The outraged pastor told his flock that Mr. Wells' famous work contained even more propaganda for evolution than Professor Scopes had tried to foist upon the defenceless inhabitants of Tennessee"
Cutting from The Western Mail, 15 Sep 1926:
"'MONKEYVILLE' AGAIN
FUNDAMENTALISTS BURN MR. H. G. WELLS' HISTORY.
'TOO POISONOUS TO BE READ.'
AMAZING SCENES AT INCINERATION CEREMONY.
An episode which recalls the famous 'Monkeyville' trial of Tennessee has taken place in the neighbouring State of Kentucky, U.S.A.
With religious ceremony, H. G. Wells' 'Outline of History' was committed to the flames because of an alleged conflict with the Book of Genesis and Zane Grey's 'To the Last Man' (which the pastor considered too spicy) followed it, as did a pack of playing-cards and a Sunday newspaper.
The outraged pastor told his flock that Mr. Wells' famous work contained even more propaganda for evolution than Professor Scopes had tried to foist upon the defenceless inhabitants of Tennessee.
KENTUCKY EMULATES TENNESSEE
PARIS, Tuesday.
The renarkable scenes which attended the burning of Mr. H. G. Wells' 'Outline of History' and other books by the perfervid Fundamentalists of Harlan, Kentucky, while the Rev. J. R. Black, pastor of the Harlan Baptist Church, pronounced an anathema and prodded the offending literature with his stick to stir up the flames, are described in a cable to the Paris edition of the 'Chicago Tribune.' Because of an alleged conflict between Mr. Wells' text and that of the anonymous author of the Book of Genesis, Dr. Black admonished his followers, none of whom had read the lengthy and imposing volumes, that the book was 'poisonous and unfit to be read'..."

Devastation, a very sad sight. We can hope and trust natural regeneration and natural colonisation, and maybe with some sympathetic help from humans, natural habitats with great biodiversity will return. Nature operates over much longer time scales than us humans and Nature is also very dynamic.

It's a Painted Lady summer for me, with patches of creeping thistle on our land - wilful neglect according to farmers, but it's their preferred caterpillar food plant. This new generation look spectacularly different to the faded and torn beauties which arrived in June. #UKwildlife #butterflies 🧵
