New fiction by Trent Jamieson: We turn at least three orbits of the gas giant now that the deceleration is done. I catch flashes in my skull, in my eyes really, but Guide says this is normal, radiation that even Ship can’t shield me from. trib.al/XJ9xLMr

Warm
When I am made awake, I blink, my limbs shuddering, and my eyes see Jupiter, first via feed that Guide has prepared, then on the observation platform, but both with my eyes. The ribbons of colour, the red spot. I am provided with many details. I am blanketed in data. I don’t know how I feel, so I ask Guide to explain in a hundred words or less.

Introducing Trent Jamieson… ( @trentonomicon.bsky.social) I live in Brisbane (Meanjin as it is called much more beautifully by the Turrbal and Yuggera people). I tend toward darkish fantasy with a taste and flavour of the places I grew up in rural New South Wales, and urban Queensland.
A photo of Trent Jamieson. A white man with dark hair, a moustache and beard, and dark framed glasses looks at the viewer. His head is resting on one hand. He has a rocket tattoo on the nearest arm. He sits at a computer, and there is a child's drawing in the background.

Ian Mond, Locus: Slatter is a tremendous writer, with a body of work that puts her in the top echelon of contemporary fantasy authors. With AFD, she’s elevated those skills to another level giving us a work that isn’t just a cracking story richly told, but also connects at a personal intimate level.

Black background with white stars. Against this are three book covers: THE HOUSE OF SHATTERED WINGS, which is solid green with a crest featuring a sword lying across the image of a tall building; THE HOUSE OF BINDING THORNS, which is solid blue with a crest featuring a tree with a regal crown perched atop it; and THE HOUSE OF SUNDERING FLAMES, which is an orange-ish red, with a crest featuring a bird circling a burning building.
