Vicente Luis Mora’s CENTROEUROPA (trans. Rahul Bery) may be the strangest book I’ve read this year. After a Viennese emigre—deceased wife in tow—lays claim to a Prussian farm, local officials continually put off deciding what to do with frozen corpses of soldiers buried throughout the land.

Maylis de Kerangal’s EASTBOUND (trans. Jessica Moore) is the most claustrophobia-inducing novel I’ve read since Kōbō Abe’s WOMAN IN THE DUNES.

It’s a thrill reading the work of a writer taking a big swing. And when it connects—boy howdy. Daniel Kraus’s ANGEL DOWN could have been another horror story set amidst the brutalities of war—and a very good one—but his stylistic choices give it a vitality that makes it something else entirely.

Troubles is extraordinary. Farrell’s next two books, The Siege of Krishnapur and Singapore Grip, are also wonderful. I’ve read them all at least three times.

I rarely leave the Arlington Central Library’s little shop without across a gem. In this case, it’s a recent biography of the early 20th century radical Elizabeth Gurley Flynn.

Howard Fishman’s remarkable TO ANYONE WHO EVER ASKS is as much a chronicle of the author’s fascination with songwriter Connie Converse as it is of Converse’s life. The former proves infectious.

The five Simpsons lines I’ve uttered most: "Embiggens is a perfectly cromulent word." “You don’t make friends with salad.” “40 seconds? But I want it now!” “See my vest, see my vest, made from real gorilla chest.” “That’s German for ‘the Bart, the.’”

Thomas Mann neglects few currents of early 20th century intellectual history in THE MAGIC MOUNTAIN. Philosophy, politics, science, religion—the list goes on. It is a work of extraordinary ambition and density that somehow remains a joy to read.

K. C. Constantine shifts his focus from anthropology to psychology in JOEY’S CASE. While his novels had increasingly explored class and race in a struggling Rust Belt town, JOEY’S CASE goes deep into self-examination and questions of conscience. Good book, as usual from the reliable Constantine.

I’m rereading (heavy skimming) Caroline Fraser’s excellent PRAIRIE FIRES: THE AMERICAN DREAMS OF LAURA INGALLS WILDER for a book club and just got to the Peshtigo wildfire. Extraordinary it happened at the same time as The Great Chicago Fire and had 4x-8x the casualties, yet it’s nearly forgotten.
