Graham Platner was getting national attention before the scandals. His campaign announcement video went viral. It was two months and several major endorsements later that all his scandals started coming to light. But you are right. Jackson's "You can't eat road salt" debate jab was big for him.

Almost all of that was made public several months into his campaign, after people like the Maine Democratic Party, Bernie Sanders, and Elizabeth Warren endorsed him. Had his campaign actually done rigorous vetting, they might have realized he was a bad candidate.

Christopher Nolan's insistence of grounding things in reality is why he's not actually the director people think he is. He can't bring himself to create something fantastical because he doesn't trust the audience to go with it. He couldn't make Pan's Labyrinth or Avatar.
