@flophousepodcast.com Spookvember? Playing today's episode my LOCKED, face-up, nothing-touching-it phone suddenly sped up playback to 3x speed. I thought it was a bit in the recording (Elliott sounded normal), but as it carried on realized it was in fact... a ga- ga- ga- GHOST!

Wile E. Coyote Finally Kills Road Runner Then Immediately Wishes He Hadn’t
4 panel comic

Panel 1: Wile E. Coyote has finally murdered Road Runner by crushing him under a massive boulder

Panel 2: Wile celebrates his long sought after victory

Panel 3: Wile steps out from behind the boulder and is immediately confronted by Columbo who says “Mr. Coyote” in his typically annoying but persistent manner

Panel 4: Columbo calls his name again. Panicked, Wile retreats quickly behind the boulder, but in his heart of hearts, he knows it will do no good. In about two hours he’ll be going to prison. And not cartoon prison. Human prison.

May more things be advertised like this in the near future. I also just saw another open source thing I use update with a “human only” contribution policy, and god that’s a nice feeling. So, so much better than the feeling when every other app updated with their sparkly buttons.

I’ve come to understand the appeal of chatbots to regular users: it’s easy. Ask whatever, however, and it will return an approximation of what you want. HOWEVER, if you want to a response that’s *good*, (a) “easy” goes out the window, (b) good luck. Like literally, you need luck, it’s a dice roll.

Oh, another note: whenever you hear someone say the "really smart people working on this stuff are saying X Y Z" know that they have never, for a second, considered A) if they're wrong or B) whether the person is actually smart or C) whether there might be an agenda of some sort.

What gets me about these sorts of incidents is that they illustrate how many people are using AI for COMPLETELY USELESS purposes. There are already a million US maps and periodic tables! You can get them anywhere! What conceivable reason is there to have an LLM make one? It doesn't even save effort!

It’s an obsession with “futuristic”, and a lack of imagination that all their idea of the future come from movies and TV. Unfortunately for us, most “future” media is cautionary tales (and even the ones that aren’t are often ill thought out… because the point is the story, not the tech).

4 panel comic

Panel 1:
A post from “kavishj9611” that reads:

“All the people who are anti-Al or want to slow Al progress, I have one question:
If Al disappeared tomorrow, could you still get through an entire workday without ChatGPT, Claude, or any other
Al tool?
Imagine Al was suddenly banned.
Would you actually be willing to give it up?”

Panel 2:
And Orange Guy and a Pink Guy are standing in a room that has two pipes in it. Both pipes are pumping raw sewage into the room. The characters are waist deep in it.
Orange Guy says smugly “Ok Mr “I don’t want to be in a room that’s filling up with raw sewage” let me ask you this”

Panel 3:
The sewage has reached their chests. Pink Guy is gagging. Orange Guy smugly continues “If all this sewage disappeared right now, could you get through the day without it?”

Panel 4:
The sewage is almost up to their eyeballs. Orange Guys says “Look at that shit floating past your face. Are you willing to give that up?”

The AI companies insist that the takeaway with these stories is "omg so powerful", but I beg people (especially media coverage) to also consider, "why are we building this if it's uncontrollable and dangerous?", or "if it was avoidable, is it incompetence or intentional that it happened anyways?"

I cannot overstate how good the @defector.com "Why Your Team Sucks" series is. There are genuinely good insights about the state of each NFL team, but the best part is the insults, which are plentiful, savage, and consistently hilarious.
Young Chiefs fans surely watched all of this and cried, “But this is supposed to happen to the other guys!” Wrong, you little shit. The Chiefs were very much like this before your mom gave birth to you in a Lowe’s parking lot. You’re only now just catching up. I hope a stranger tomahawk chops your head clean off your body.

I am really impressed with how well Onion's Infowars is walking the tightrope with its satire. It's so hard to do a caricature of a detestable person without being detestable yourself. Colbert was a master of it, impossibly endearing beneath it all. BOTH Haggerty and Heidecker are nailing it.

The overwhelming right wing sentiment is that COVID was an engineered bioweapon that was also harmless. Trump overreacted to it by shutting down the country, then engineered a drive to create a vaccine that was the real bioweapon that killed millions, and it's Joe Biden's fault.

I've now seen The Odyssey, and it feels like it's going to be Sinners / One Battle After Another all over again. Movies that are lightning rods of criticism from dirtbag bigots, prompting irritatingly exaggerated praise from everyone else. Nolan is a great filmaker, but the screenplay is dogshit.

Toronto reportedly had the world’s worst air quality yesterday, at an AQI of ~160. Today? 🤐 I haven’t seen Americans complaining about “Canadian wildfires” yet, but I know I will, and it will infuriate me. These are global warming’s wildfires, and the yanks have every bit as much ownership of them.

I don't think "extreme" is the problem, we just need to insist on the specificity of "extremely WHAT?" The both sideism is going to collapse when on the one hand it's "extremism" promoting cycling lanes and public libraries, and on the other it's lawless detentions, murders and corruption.

A pretty good and biting analysis of the SpaceX IPO, with only two points that irked me. One being credulousness towards Anthropic (an AI competitor's) claim to being profitable, and the other "presuming" that cooling is easy in space. No! You link to a Tom's Hardware that quantifies the difficulty.
(Presumably also the environment will help with cooling, which is often done, controversially, with water. I suppose you could radiate heat to space like the James Webb Space Telescope does?)[excerpt from Tom's Hardware article linked later in The Verge's story, cited for the difficulty of replacing air & water cooling]

In addition, nearly all of the input power becomes heat, which must be radiated into space, which means millions of square meters of radiators to handle 1+ GW of thermal load. How much will such radiators weigh and how much will cost lifting them to space is something that remains to be seen, but since radiators tend to weigh more than solar panels, we are talking about tens of billions of dollars here.

I sometimes get despondent at how awful the social internet is, knowing it *can* be such an amazing way to connect people and share experiences. In this case I'm not just talking about the scrolly apps, I'm talking about product reviews. Get a load of this, from the totally human "Amazon Customer":
Amazon review for Pedialyte Strawberry Freeze, from user name "Amazon Customer". Rating: 5 stars, title: "AMAZING PRODUCT". Reviewed in Canada on January 10, 2026. Review:

he [sic] Pedialyte AdvancedCare Plus Electrolyte Powder Sticks in Strawberry Freeze are a game‑changer when it comes to staying hydrated. These packets are super convenient—just mix with water and you’ve got a great‑tasting drink that actually works.

The flavor is tasty without being too sweet, and it goes down easy even when you’re feeling wiped out. I noticed a real difference in how quickly I felt replenished after workouts and long days in the heat. It helps settle that heavy, dehydrated feeling way better than plain water.

Love the value pack too—great for keeping in the car, gym bag, or office. If you want fast, effective hydration with a pleasant flavor, these Pedialyte sticks do the job. Highly recommend!

“I don’t know what to do with my arms, does this look natural on camera?” “Nailed it in one boss, don’t change anything” “Really, just hang my hands limply like this?” “PERFECT”
Crop of one of the bland white dudes in collared shirts sitting on a couch from the 4-up in the original post. His elbows are pointed outwards symmetrically, while his hands hang limp. His knees are squeezed together, making him narrow at the bottom and wide at the top, it seems as if he might tip over (but he’s sitting). He stares straight into the camera with the sheepish look of someone who’s just ripped a massive fart and is hoping nobody notices.

More performative premeditated killing by the Trump administration. The administration is happy to share these snuff films but won’t release the DOJ permission slip for this slaughter at sea—or even identify these “Designated Terrorist Organizations.”
On May 8, at the direction of #SOUTHCOM commander Gen. Francis L. Donovan, Joint Task Force Southern Spear conducted a lethal kinetic strike on a vessel operated by Designated Terrorist Organizations. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was transiting along known narco-trafficking routes in the Eastern Pacific and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. Two male narco-terrorists were killed during this action, and one survived the strike. Following the engagement, USSOUTHCOM immediately notified the U.S. Coast Guard to activate the Search and Rescue system for the survivor. No U.S. military forces were harmed.

Yes. The brain doesn’t work like AI. It’s not a computer. We use metaphors for it from technology b/c it’s really hard to understand how the brain works and we don’t entirely understand how a pile of electrified jello does all this. But it’s definitely much cooler than AI.
