A friendly reminder that Bluesky has this fantastic toggle in Settings >> Accessibility that will require alt text before you can post images. Toggle it on and be more #Accessible!
A screen shot of the Accessibility settings shows the top toggle. When turned on, this setting will require posts with images to include alt text before you post. No longer do you have to remember!

Thinking a lot lately about the men I know who are willfully ignorant about power dynamics and how I don’t *know* they’ve done anything specifically worse than be willfully ignorant about power dynamics but also if I had to guess which of my acquaintances had, I’d guess them first.

Higher Ed orgs are enormously complicated bureaucracies, it's a wonder they work* at all. To understand their inner workings one must follow the money. As such, where the money comes from and where it's going are treated as two secrets that can never be know by one person. *for some value of work.

Oh. That's a heck of a subsidy.
At MIT, Harvard, or any other school, supervising an undergraduate researcher is a lot of work, costs a lot of money, involves a lot of meetings, and the results are not reliably excellent. Asking Claude is easier, faster, and may produce better results. It’s also cheaper, which is no accident: Harvard allows every Harvard student and faculty member to request a Claude token budget of $2,500 per month, even as research funding is continuously threatened and the University lays off staff.

I hope we learn what happened here, but it feels like a huge systems issues somewhere that this happened. If you have a system (or a leader) that can let mass unenrollment happen you have a failure. In a properly functioning system a series of people would have been able to pull the brakes on this.

In 2014 this was considered humorous, in the near future we will wish that our tech billionaires had simply wanted to turn us into dinos instead of spending all their money on doomsday bunkers and data centers.
Spiderman asks a dinosaurman "Why are you turning people into dinosaurs, with this tech you could cure cancer?"
Evil dino man responds: "But I don't want to cure cancer..."
