Much as we love bookshops, they need more than love to keep going. A bookshop can be the centre of a whole community. Bookshops support authors; organize events. A thriving bookshop teaches the next generation that literacy matters. So don't just love your bookshop: actually buy books there.

Unsolicited writing advice, no 2052: Consider writing diverse characters, not because they represent you, but because they are part of the world you inhabit. Why write a small world when you can write a wide one?

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

The Strid, Yorkshire, 05/10/2025
Photograph of a part of the river Wharfe, Yorkshire. The river runs wide and shallow and the sunlight has given it a golden sheen. Before it, bramble. Behind, verdant treeline. Close by, probably within an hour's walk, the river turns on its side becoming immensely deep while appearing to be merely a simple stream.

I keep being reminded of those hilarious 80s commercials that started with “has this ever happened to you?” and showed someone having hilariously exaggerated trouble watering a plant or emptying a garbage can. No, that has never happened to me because I live in reality not in a commercial.

A particularly infuriating aspect of this A.I. bullshit is that nobody seems to remember that we all got along just fine without it for centuries. How are we all suddenly incapable of reading and understanding written words? Of creating art? Of telling stories? It’s madness.

I read this story long before the pandemic, but it's forever associated with the pandemic for me now because in April 2020, my makeshift home desk was by a window overlooking an elevated train station, and I could see the trains come in, doors open to empty cars, no one get on or off, doors close

Something ancient and wonderful for the weekend! A tiny horse figurine carved from mammoth ivory about 40,000 years ago! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely pale white in colour. It measures 2.5 cm height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents.

The ‘Vogelherd Horse’ was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.

Bronze axehead from Semiyarka, a c. 1600 BC site in the Kazakh Steppe. Evidence for complex metallurgy and a dedicated industrial zone suggests the site was a centre of the Central Asian metal trade: perhaps a kind of Bronze Age steppe urbanism. 🆓 doi.org/10.15184/aqy... 🏺 #Archaeology
