Very recently Dead Ink had to close their physical store because of costs. Heartbreaking. I recommend any horror fan look at what they're publishing.

Much as we love bookshops, they need more than love to keep going. A bookshop can be the centre of a whole community. Bookshops support authors; organize events. A thriving bookshop teaches the next generation that literacy matters. So don't just love your bookshop: actually buy books there.

Unedited, we have historic example of how far we have come. The problematic works we loved helped us grow, we should be willing to measure them by their own merits, distasteful as they could be. Unedited, but with understanding that they are not exemplars to follow

The past is a well-trod country. Travellers have told us of the many facets that belie its antiquated sceneries. With the perspective of the modern, I feel, it is best to holiday in the past with an open mind, a willingness to leave when we find it distasteful, and always with guidebook in hand.

But I feel we, as a society, often don't reckon with how ephemeral all works of art are. They are not only dated by their time and their creator, but also by the fact that time cannot stop. Often, a beloved author is published for the last time, then perhaps forgotten.

Anthony Hope's Prince of Zenda was a literary phenomenon that spawned a whole subgenre of adventure literature. Yet I feel most readers will never have heard of it. Let alone his other works. I think older texts should be unedited. Hell, I'm a queer Lovecraft fan. He was as problematic as they come.

There's an understandable impulse I've seen from older readers to want the thing they KNOW is amazing, but has been out of print for decades. Then, we have artists beyond living memory, many people might not be able to name Victorian best sellers whose books just slipped away over the decades.

As a former bookseller, currently academic librarian, the amount of old texts I've handled in the last few years could boggle the mind. I don't think we should edit older texts, save perhaps updated introductions. What gets me, is most readers I meet don't realise just how much gets lost to time.

Unsolicited writing advice, no 2052: Consider writing diverse characters, not because they represent you, but because they are part of the world you inhabit. Why write a small world when you can write a wide one?

werner herzog on AI filmmaking (from here www.indiewire.com/features/int...)
Q: A couple years ago at IDFA, I saw this movie "About a Hero," which is this partly Al-generated hybrid documentary that tries to recreate the atmosphere of your films.

A: The intention of this young filmmaker was never to remake any [of my films], but making something in the spirit. And I immediately said, "You will fail. It is such a stupid idea. It's phenomenally, abysmally stupid. I will not take part in it." He wanted me to explain things and have my voice in it.
I said, "You are alone. There's such a thing as free speech, which I respect. So go ahead and fail." And it is a failure, period.
It's so standardized that Al can step in because there's not real storytelling. It's mimicry of something that has happened before. And I welcome Al to replace all the idiots who are into nothing but repeating, repeating, repeating until it's ad nauseam.
When it's ad nauseam, please, please, please let Al step in and do the job.

The Strid, Yorkshire, 05/10/2025
Photograph of a part of the river Wharfe, Yorkshire. The river runs wide and shallow and the sunlight has given it a golden sheen. Before it, bramble. Behind, verdant treeline. Close by, probably within an hour's walk, the river turns on its side becoming immensely deep while appearing to be merely a simple stream.

I keep being reminded of those hilarious 80s commercials that started with “has this ever happened to you?” and showed someone having hilariously exaggerated trouble watering a plant or emptying a garbage can. No, that has never happened to me because I live in reality not in a commercial.

A particularly infuriating aspect of this A.I. bullshit is that nobody seems to remember that we all got along just fine without it for centuries. How are we all suddenly incapable of reading and understanding written words? Of creating art? Of telling stories? It’s madness.

Harper Collins has been reprinting editions of Lovecraft with these Tim White covers recently. They're so much more eye catching than a lot of other books on shelves. Really hope we see more eighties inspired art coming back to books soon.

I read this story long before the pandemic, but it's forever associated with the pandemic for me now because in April 2020, my makeshift home desk was by a window overlooking an elevated train station, and I could see the trains come in, doors open to empty cars, no one get on or off, doors close

Something ancient and wonderful for the weekend! A tiny horse figurine carved from mammoth ivory about 40,000 years ago! Imagine the #IceAge artist at work, sitting by the warmth of a fire, creating what is the world’s oldest known figure of a horse! 📷 by me #Archaeology
My photo shows a profile view of a small horse figurine with head to the left, displayed against a dark background. Sculpted from mammoth ivory, the surface is a mottled greyish-earthy-brown colour with a shiny patina. It was once likely pale white in colour. It measures 2.5 cm height, 4.8 cm width, and 0.7 cm depth. The head is gracefully lowered with a long and elegant curving neck, and a convex curved back. The four legs are incomplete. The top of the tail remains. The eyes, nostrils, and mouth are carved as indents.

The ‘Vogelherd Horse’ was excavated in 1931, together with a number of other ivory animal figurines from the Vogelherd Cave, Swabian Jura, Germany. It is the oldest known sculpture of a horse. On display at the Museum of Ancient Cultures, at Hohentübingen Castle, Tübingen, Germany.
