Ah, Jeffrey Archer has died. I'm sure he'll be remembered fondly and we won't get a flurry of stories about him that were held back by the risk of libel action until now.

Well, there was a reason we chose a fixed rate mortgage to finish after Trump left office. I'd thought he wasn't going to bother starting wars I admit, but figured there'd be some stupid idea to make lives worse.

Jaws - I think kids were left to watch TV at someone's house while the adults had dinner and I was WAY too young. Traumatised. Also, when I was a older, so 11 ish, Chimera and Ghostwatch. First time I'd see anything remotely like either and they terrified me.

Dust jacket wouldn't work with the set though, we'd taken it from a grandparents house because they look nice all together & hadn't read many of hers.
A row of red leather Agatha Christies, almost all of which aren't racist. I think. I've not read them yet. Oh gods...

Terry pratchett occupies the row below. I didn't need to mention that, but I like that he's made it to the living room at last

Thank you. I think it went OK yes, but whether the book should remain don't know. Not like I'm likely to read it.

He asked in a very sensible way, carefully avoiding saying it, so we got to talk about how it wasn't called that these days and all the whys involved. I'd honestly not noticed it was included despite them being on a high shelf for years.

So we put up a new bookcase in our living room and put the big set of omnibus Agatha Christie books on it. I hadn't actually thought about how old the set was until 5 mins later when the chosen one asks me about one particular title. Which I guess has turned out to be a positive thing.

My latest books cartoon for @theguardian.com
Title: Just announced! Three new Gruffalo books commissioned from bestselling authors!

Lee Chilld:
The Gruffalo just wants a quiet life, but when a crime syndicate moves into the deep dark wood, he must use his terrible claws and the terrible teeth in his terrible jaws to protect the fellow.

Sally Rooney:
The Gruffalo moves to contemporary Dublin. He
ill ever see past his orange eyes, purple prickles and poisonous wart.

Kazuo Ishiguro:
After a long absence, the gruffalo returns to the forest and attempts to make sense of his past. Encounters with a mouse, a fox, an owl and a snake uncover long-buried memories, regrets and revelations.

On National Poetry Day, here’s a short poem about the power of poetry to change the world.
The Power of Poetry

with things falling apart
and anarchy let loose,

it was only poetry, he found,
which had any use,

so he reached for his copy
of The Complete Works of Yeats

and bludgeoned the President
of the United States

44,000 people told the NHS to stop processing their records, under article 21 of the UK GDPR. Not a petition: it reverses the burden of proof, and NHS England must answer each one. www.yeandel.co.uk/22-q3-2026-update… #TechSovereignty

44,000 People Have Told the NHS to Stop Processing Their Records. The Law Says Someone Now Has to Answer Each One.
A campaign has put more than 44,000 formal objections to the Palantir-built NHS data platform on the record, using article 21 of the UK GDPR. That provision does not ask for a consultation response. It reverses the burden of proof and makes NHS England argue, case by case, why it should be allowed t

Breath & Bone is another of @kvjohansen.bsky.social 's elegant, complicated fantasies featuring characters living with the consequences of their own actions. (Link to us but available at all the usual suspects.) www.candlemarkandgleam.com/shop/breath-...
Book cover: in a blue-toned forest, a dark-haired woman is just drawing a sword while at her side a shorter woman carrying a harp looks intently out of the image. Breath and Bone, K.V. Johansen. A long-retired swordswoman, savior of godlings and killer of emperors, takes to the road again with her shapeshifting companion and the ghost of her brother. A desperate girl needs their help to rescue her own lost brother — and the witch who holds him in thrall is their old enemy. “A wonderful tale of rescue and redemption.” — Tom Lloyd. “This fairytale-like stry has both teeth and heart.” — KD Edwards

recently I wondered whether the reason I'm more interested in talking to the mums at my kids school than many of the dads isn't just cos I'm not actually that blokey, but cos a large chunk of men don't read much/fiction at all. I don't need to talk about books but we don't think the same way now

While I've not seen research, I'd hazard that a mix of visual reading and audiobooks does most good to your brain, but life and habits dictate what works for you and the benefits of reading remain. The benefits are to society more widely as well which is one reason why Dolly Parton was a saint

"Should reading be encouraged as part of a healthy lifestyle choice, much like exercising or eating well? Or as a hobby, an activity done for pleasure?" Why does everything demand a binary response? Surely the answer's "both" as you show people the existing evidence for them.
