I find it strange how often the history of Jews in Europe more broadly is treated as a niche or specialist topic, rather than being part of the main stream of European history. It’s a *choice* to leave Jewish history out of the story.

Random Q: anyone know of any woodcuts which clearly show andirons / firedogs in use in a fireplace?
Pair of wrought iron and brass firedogs (or andirons), Italy, 16th-century. V&A. They consist of a long piece of black iron piece of iron in a rainbow shape. Horizontal bars of iron stick out from the top of the rainbow shapes with a shorter piece of iron at right angles to it to balance the structure.

The "all anti-Zionism is always and forever antisemitism" people and the "all antisemitism becomes fine if we just say it's anti-Zionism, even if we're ranting about the Talmud" people reinforce one another, even if both sides utterly fail to see it.

It really is interesting how we don’t call, say, a journalist who wrote a pop-sci book on galaxies an ‘astrophysicist’, or a retired banker who wrote a pop-psych book on personality types a ‘psychologist’—but the media call any rando who writes a book on something in the past a ‘historian’.

Please, for the love of God, can the media stop calling random cranks who write fan fiction about their personal heroes in the past "historians."
Geoff Shepard, a former Nixon aide turned Watergate historian and revisionist, recently gave a two-hour presentation at Justice Department headquarters that laid out his theory that the deep state took Nixon down. The title of his 78-page slide deck: “Watergate As Lawfare.”

There is a lot of "oh dear" to go around in the results of this very thorough Pew study on the issues with synthetic samples, but this strikes me as particularly "oh dear" www.pewresearch.org/data-labs/20...
AI polling results can lean on racial or partisan stereotypes

In many cases, our AI poll took beliefs or attitudes that are reasonably common among a particular subgroup and portrayed them as nearly ubiquitous. For example, our AI poll would indicate that:

97% of Hispanic adults are at least somewhat likely to follow the World Cup (while the actual share is 43%).

I'm kinda fully over that "the British conquered the world for spices and don't use any of them" joke because for one, you cannot recycle material for 5 straight generations and get a laugh worth a damn but also because in order to make it you have to agree with Tommy Robinson about who is British
