Imagine thinking "There's not enough software in the world, and what little we have is made with too much damn care! We don't need this kind of perfection – we need more apps!" I'm utterly unable to relate to the people in my field.

AI coding tools are no different from compilers: you take the compiler output, make your coworkers review it, and commit it to source control so other people can use their own compilers to edit it, just like we've always done.

also, music is *communal*, it is an experience you share and have in common with other people, that is a huge part of how music comes to mean anything, the idea of "personalised music" just conceptually makes no sense

A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.

Some big tech 2025 revenues for scale: Amazon: $638 B Apple: $416 B Alphabet (Google): $350 B Microsoft: $282 B The AI industry would have to generate way more revenue than all of Microsoft, about the same as Google/Apple, or half of Amazon *just to break even*! That's a lot of Claude Max plans.

I don't know if the company or the people behind Jev are as horrible as all the other players in the AI space, but I think they have the right idea about how to constrain LLMs to work as serious tools instead of a parlor trick that's got way out of hand.

I wondered if I'd be excited about "AI" if I was just growing up now. Then I remembered that in my teens I used to spell Microsoft with a dollar sign and ran Linux back when the easiest way to get it was for some weirdo to mail you a stack of CD-Rs. So yeah, I'm pretty sure I would still be a hater.

These days I often end up deleting my own code comments that explain why the code is written the way it is. They're shaped like Claude's nonsense, so no human will ever read them, but without any comments the code itself might look human enough to make someone actually read it.

it's not just that LLMs replace making an effort with making shit up, it's that they make the former *read as* the latter. they're fractally destructive to the conveyance of information

8. often, when people say LLMs "can do" something they mean LLMs can produce output that looks like the output of doing something 9. producing something that looks like the output of doing something is not the same thing as doing it

Even if all it took to replace a legacy system with a new one was a single wave of a magic wand, a large organization can easily take years just to agree on who will do the waving, and for all those years the legacy system will have to keep working and adjusting to the changes in its environment.

I'm still having a hard time coming to terms with the fact that my long-time policy of "let's wait three years to see how a new technology works out for the early adopters before we use it for something that we'll have to support for a decade or more" now makes me the radical risk taker.
