We look at four problems: scaling and sustainability, operating costs externalised onto open infrastructures, the dissolution of provenance, and the simple fact that, in cataloguing, having no metadata is preferable to having erroneous (aka "hallucinated") metadata. #MetadataMatters

We argue AI is being sold to HEI management as a miracle cure. We re-surface the questions hiding behind the shiny chat interface: who owns & governs them, what costs (financially, environmentally, socially), and what happens when open knowledge feeds proprietary tools no one can trace / inspect?

This principle also underpins the Thoth Open Archiving Network: using Thoth metadata and publishing workflows to help distribute #OAbooks and their metadata across multiple preservation locations, rather than relying on a single repository or service. 7/8

Thoth Open Metadata @thoth-metadata.eurosky.social · 23/09/2026
This is particularly relevant for small and scholar-led publishers, for whom preservation needs to be not only robust but practical and affordable. Our review found that a combination of Internet Archive ( @archive.org ) + Zenodo can together provide a strong, free-to-use open archiving option. 6/8

Thoth Open Metadata @thoth-metadata.eurosky.social · 22/09/2026
Rather than searching for a single “best” archive, we suggest a different approach: combining infrastructures whose strengths complement one another. In other words, redundancy - a useful thing in archiving! - can be organisational as well as technical. 5/8

Thoth Open Metadata @thoth-metadata.eurosky.social · 22/09/2026
One of the clearest findings was that no single service met all eight criteria. Different infrastructures do different things well: some place greater emphasis on long-term preservation assurance, while others make content and metadata openly accessible right from the outset. 4/8

To explore this, we compared five archiving services — CLOCKSS, Portico, Internet Archive, Zenodo and Figshare — against the eight Copim Open Archiving Criteria developed during the Open Book Futures project. [For more about the Open Archiving Criteria, please see our thread from last week} 3/8
