This is a big problem — and an unnecessary one. Funders should not just allow for but insist upon grantees writing support for research infrastructure into grant proposals. Sustainability of research demands sustainability of infrastructure. E.g., about.hcommons.org/contribute...

1/ In 2024, I filed a false claims act lawsuit against Elsevier, Springer, Wiley & Informa alleging they systematically overcharged US federal grants for article processing. The gov declined to intervene and now it's public. Some thoughts on what this is, and what it isn't:

V. pleased to announce this. We have been working together for some time, but the MoU helps formalise things. The divisions between books & journals in the scholarly system are ultimately arbitrary, so this kind of collaboration is vital to collectively argue for better ways of doing open publishing
