Some read Marx with devotion. Others with contempt. Lyotard proposes a third approach: stroke the beard and see what desires emerge. The beard is not a theoretical barrier. It is a complex libidinal volume. Historical materialism has entered its conditioner era.

Happy 93rd birthday to Alberto Asor Rosa. A key figure in early operaismo, from Classe Operaia to Contropiano. Silvia Federici engaged his work in her early research on Lukács. An intellectual history worth keeping in circulation. Photo: Danilo De Marco

C.L.R. James knew that discipline and rebellion aren’t always opposites. Beyond a Boundary asks what a game can teach about freedom: rules can discipline, but they can also create the conditions for improvisation, collective intelligence – and learning how to play otherwise.

60 years ago today, the Destruction in Art Symposium opened in London. DIAS asked what destruction in art might reveal about the much greater destruction organising society itself. Not art safely observing catastrophe, but art entering the problem.

Ian Svenonius: rock groups replaced the old avant-gardes. Maybe the interesting question isn’t just what a band sounds like, but what kind of collective form it invents: a style, a scene, a mythology, a way of organising people around possibility.

What if defending study didn’t mean defending the university as it currently exists? Abolitionist University Studies asks us to put the institution itself back into question – and to separate study from the university’s claim to own it. Build the impossible. abolition.university/invitation/

Abolitionist University Studies: An Invitation - Abolition University
Abolition offers the occasion for thinking about the university in ways that the institution itself might otherwise render impossible.

31 Aug 1909: Francisco Ferrer was captured after weeks hiding in caves following Barcelona’s Tragic Week. With authoritarianism rising and universities being terminally neoliberalised, the cave is starting to look less like a hideout than an autonomous study space. (Not advice.)

Adorno’s “to write poetry after Auschwitz is barbaric” is often treated like a ban on art. The fuller passage is harder: catastrophe changes what culture can mean, because the conditions that produced it remain. Sometimes you need the second fortune cookie.

384 years ago today the English Civil War began. Not the war itself to celebrate, but what escaped through the cracks: Levellers demanding popular sovereignty, soldiers debating their officers, Diggers questioning property. For a moment, hierarchy itself became an open question.

21 August: Nat Turner’s rebellion began in 1831. George Jackson was killed in 1971. Harney & Moten: abolition means ending not just prisons, but “a society that could have prisons, that could have slavery.” Two histories. One long struggle against captivity.

Happy Monday. A reminder from Madeleine Bunting that overwork is not only about hours, but about the selves we are encouraged to become: productive, self-managing, endlessly optimised. Meanwhile, care, idleness, friendship and simply being get pushed aside. Try being gloriously inefficient today.

Foucault’s point still cuts: fascism does not only arrive in familiar forms. Part of intellectual work is learning to recognize what is being normalized, tolerated or made ordinary – and helping make it intolerable again. #Foucault #Antifascism

Philip Glass installing a dishwasher while Robert Hughes stares in disbelief is a perfect little parable. “But you are an artist,” Hughes says. Yes — and sometimes a plumber as well. Glass kept working as a plumber and taxi driver into his late 40s. Art and labour were never opposites.

Born 147 years ago today: Emiliano Zapata. Zapata’s enduring proposition was bigger than replacing one government with another: land, resources and the organisation of everyday life should be in the hands of those who actually sustain them. The questions remain. So does Zapata.

Feminist art history is not a few neglected names added to an unchanged canon. As Griselda Pollock argues, it transforms the objects, theories and methods of the field itself. Not more names in the same old frame. A redefinition of the frame.

Raoul Vaneigem has died. He leaves us no instruction manual, thankfully – only an insistence that everyday life can still be stolen back from work, boredom and obedience: in argument, song, drink, dance, love, revolt and the invention of new poetry.

On 25 July 1867, Marx signed the preface to Capital, Volume I. Political economy, he warned, summons the “violent, mean and malignant passions” of private interest. Scientific criticism is welcome; concessions to so-called public opinion are not. The Furies remain busy.

One or several Jimothies. Freud hears of six or seven Jimothies in a tree, sees five drawn, and declares neurosis. But every child knows Jimothies travel in packs. A Jimothy is never one: compact of spine, short of tail, already a multiplicity. Do not interpret it. Follow the pack.

Today would have been Frantz Fanon’s 101st birthday. His engagement with football remains under-appreciated: he would surely have despised the corrupt, hyper-capitalist spectacle of this World Cup. The answer is not abandonment, but reclaiming football as a radical commons.

While many celebrate the World Cup, we’d rather celebrate community football and proletarian internationalism – with this banger from Clapton CFC vs New York International. The best football is free jazz: collective, unruly, alive. Soundtrack: Peter Brötzmann.
