It's conference season, so I wanted to share the AI refusal statement I put at the end of my presentations and book talks. Feel free to use it!
AI Refusal Statement
I did not use generative AI at any point in the production of this book or presentation, including the literature review, writing, editing, translation, organization, or any other task (e.g. brainstorming). To the extent that it is possible to know, I did not cite any studies that used generative AI.
Justification: GenAI technology is based on stolen labor, anti-solidarity between workers, class exploitation, structural racism, misogyny, environmental injustice, and climate destabilization.

Irene Morgan (b. #OTD in 1917) was a seminal figure in the early #CivilRights movement. She refused to give up her seat on a segregated bus in 1944. Her case, 𝘔𝘰𝘳𝘨𝘢𝘯 𝘷. 𝘝𝘪𝘳𝘨𝘪𝘯𝘪𝘢 (1946), led the US Supreme Court to strike down segregation on interstate travel, paving the way for the Freedom Rides.
A large portrait of Irene Morgan, an older Black woman with short, dark hair, wearing a light-colored blazer and a white blouse with a bow. In the bottom left corner, a smaller inset photo shows a younger Morgan from the 1940s with styled hair, leaning her chin on her hand and wearing a dark sweater and necklace.A vintage newspaper clipping headlined "Morgan Vs. State of Virginia" and "Case to be Supreme Court Hot Potato."

The center of the article features a black-and-white photograph of a young Irene Morgan, a Black woman with dark, styled hair, looking slightly to the side with a faint smile. She is wearing a patterned jacket over a dark top. The surrounding columns of text detail her legal battle against segregated seating on interstate buses, which led to the landmark 1946 Supreme Court ruling. The paper appears aged with visible fold lines and some handwritten notes at the top.

The only thing more embarrassing than inviting Rufo to speak about intellectual freedom is paying him more than a graduate student makes in a year.
Regarding Rufo’s compensation, I’ll note that academics often speak for free or a nominal honorarium. And invited academic speakers are typically recognized by their peers as subject area experts who have spent years researching and teaching.

Post from the head of the AFT: No matter how you feel about AI, its use is growing more widespread and it's important that educators understand how they could integrate it as a tool in their classrooms.
