We used virtual mates and genetic algorithms to ask swordtail fish to design their ideal mate. Males all liked larger females but females did not share a clear preference for male appearance. 1,200 sexual assault cases were filed at Cornell from 2018 to 2024. Most of those found responsible received minor sanctions that allowed them to remain on campus, such as probation or training. Only 7 ended in expulsion or dismissal. www.usatoday.com/story/news/n...

To make sense of speech, listeners must segment sound streams into pieces. Across languages, people do so based more on consonants than vowels. In Cape York (Australia) for field work now, where most of my work is watching riflebirds from a hide. Sometimes the males don’t show up, which leaves me sitting and waiting for hours. I never get bored in the rainforest, though. There’s something about just being in the woods I never tire of.
