I'm pleased to share our new review, published in Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society B, with L.Baciadonna, C.Macri & M.Giurfa. We discuss evidence for emotions in insects and their possible deep evolutionary roots, while stressing the need for rigor and caution doi.org/10.1098/rstb...

Exploring emotional expression in invertebrates: mechanisms, functions and phylogeny
Abstract. The idea that invertebrates may exhibit basic forms of emotion, and possibly sentience, is gaining traction as evidence of their advanced cogniti

Great invited talk by Luigi Baciadonna at the Royal Society meeting, exploring affective states in insects and their implications for embodied AI Many thanks to HaDi MaBouDi, Andrew Barrow, Mikko Juusola for organizing such an inspiring meeting bridging animal behaviour and artificial intelligence!

Just got a physical copy of Pim Edelaar's new book, the Selective Organism: and Expanded Theory of Adaptive Evolution. This is a truly wonderful book, applying causal methods to real eco-evo problems. And better yet, it is freely available: academic.oup.com/book/63165 Congrats, Pim!

IUSSI2026 is over! It was a great success from every point of view. I’m so grateful to Judith Korb and the organizers for giving me the wonderful opportunity to be one of the plenary speakers. It was truly an honor! Looking forward to attending the next meeting in Africa in four years’ time!

So excited to be in Freiburg for the #IUSSI2026 Conference and to join this gathering of social insect researchers from around the world!! Honored — and a bit scared! — to deliver my plenary lecture on Thursday, and even more excited to reconnect with many friends! @uissi-social.bsky.social

New study, led by Aaron Fairweather, provides a robust method to test impacts of #pesticide exposure on soil-nesting insects. We found substantive negative impacts on ants after soil drench applications of imidacloprid including behavioural changes & increased mortality: doi.org/10.1093/etoj...
Custom experimental nest design constructed from two 946 ml 100% food-grade bisphenol A-free polypropylene clear plastic containers with a 0.95 cm gap, filled with test soil, and provided with a cotton stoppered tube filled with 50/50 sugar-water solution and a cricket.

It's paper double bill day! Paper 1: In @royalsocietypublishing.org the brilliant Luigi Baciadonna and I asked how variable #bee #optimism is. Individual bees do not make consistently optimistic choices over days even if the group is remarkably consistent. royalsocietypublishing.org/rsbl/article...

Do insects feel pain or is it just a reflex? We found that GABAergic signalling modulates bumblebee nocifensive responses. A centrally acting drug reduced these behaviors and altered brain gene expression, suggesting modulation of the central nervous system rather than a simple peripheral reflex
