A conceptual schematic illustrating the logic of the studies. (A) Infants observe a central actor who shares saliva with one actor and does not share saliva with another actor. (B) From such observations, infants may infer and represent whether the actors are connected and how thick each connection is. (C) These representations support infants' expectations of who will respond to the central actor's distress.

Chimpanzees usually fail a simple pointing task that human infants and dogs pass. In our new iScience paper, we provide a possible explanation: once their attention is engaged, chimpanzees use human pointing to find hidden food 73% of the time. Attention may be the missing piece.
Figure 2. Three photos showing the experimental conditions. Left: the experimenter points toward the baited container while calling the chimpanzee’s name and making food grunts. Center: he points without vocal attention-getting cues. Right: he provides gaze and food grunts but does not point. Chimpanzees succeeded only when attention-getting cues and pointing were combined.

Wow! ICE’s airport arrests of people seemingly waiting in government immigration backlogs caught up a Fulbright scholar and public health researcher working at Johns Hopkins in their public health department. Not exactly the “worst of the worst”! Yet they threw her in detention anyway.

A Johns Hopkins University public health researcher and former Fulbright scholar was detained this week by immigration agents while boarding a domestic flight as the Trump administration ramps up immigration enforcement efforts at airports.
In an email Thursday night, the U.S.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency arrested Fatima Ameaka on July 28 at Baltimore-Washington
