Psilocybin mushrooms are found worldwide, yet I have long argued (based on direct evidence) that traditional use is confined to Mesoamerica. I was wrong! In a new paper led by @eselster.bsky.social, we document Indigenous psilocybin mushroom use—potentially very old—in highland southern Africa.

Monotheism has swept the world in just a few thousand years, making it one of the most important cultural innovations in human history. In this week's New Yorker, I offer an explanation for what makes it so powerful. (It's not about belief in one god.) www.newyorker.com/magazine/202...

5-star review of Manvir Singh's "Shamanism: The timeless religion"

A rare gem I recommend to both academics and non-academics!
As a fellow anthropologist, i really loved it! It is the rare book I feel I can recommend it to both academics and non-academics! I particularly enjoyed hearing about Manvir’s early fieldwork experiences and defence of criticisms of comparative research.

The main thing I would have liked more of was discussion of music, or of alcohol and other non-psychedelic drugs. Songs, dances, and drumming were mentioned repeatedly but they didn’t seem to play as central a role as I was expecting. A very minor limitation in a really great book!
