Peelers response to the Garvaghy road residents would be shameful regardless but it is rage inducing given failures around the Belfast pograms & a complete police failure to respond to far right violence across Ireland and Britain. But this "low risk" parade seems to have all the police resources.

Granted, these proposals give potential (or rather, soon-to-be) citizens an understanding of this government's values, such as a willingness to throw hard-working people in our communities under the bus to appease their colleagues in the EU, as well as outright racists who won't vote for them anyway

And that can be achieved without calling them thugs or expressing disgust at anyone eulogising for them - which would include their families, who have that right. I do not recall Crowe saying anything similar on the death of Michael Fingleton, despite him contributing harm towards many more people.

I'd like to compare how Irish commentators wrote about Jason Arday with how they wrote about Brian Lucey, the Irish academic who had several papers retracted earlier this year because he had been corruptly peer reviewing his own work, but literally no Irish commentators wrote about it

Re how much coverage this got - I saw someone pointing out that the Vice Chancellor of University of Manchester was fired for misappropriating millions of pounds, and it scarcely made the news compared to this. But of course that's clearly not an important story regarding ethics in academia

Right, because the Democrats ran a competent campaign that succesfully incorporated all components of their coalition, and there were no economic wedge issues that were exploitable? It was more on-trend for incumbent governments to lose elections than win them in 2024. Ireland was an outlier there.

So, unless we regulate tech giants properly - which I don't see any EU govt seriously doing, sadly - either you offer better material answers for people who are disaffected. Or, you try placating those sentiments with diet versions of the far-right's platform re: migrants and minorities, like FFG.

Thomas Creamer @thomascreamer.bsky.social · 19/06/2026
For a start, reactionary populism is not a specifically anglosphere phenomenon - it's very much a global one. I would love to see proper regulation on social media - not that FFG will do anything about it. But I don't see the point in pretending that material conditions don't factor in as well.

The Nazis didn't automatically rise to power either right in the years immediately following the end of WWII, despite the hyperinflation and all the madness surrounding it. I don't think anyone would then claim that as evidence that their rise after 1929 had nothing to do with the Great Depression.

Per most recent figures, net migration to NI *over the past 22 years* has been ~62,000 people. Only 3% of Northern Ireland’s population currently belong to an ethnic minority. Pogroms in Belfast (as with Ballymena last year) are just gutter-level "One Is One Too Many" racism, and nothing else.

A discussion on the source of the problem - the recommender algorithms itself - would actually get closer to the root of things, but we're not having that discussion because it's easier to slap a ban (it at least attempt to) and call it a day. Because that's exactly what will happen with FFG.

One of the big problems is precisely because is basically the only solution the likes of FG are talking about implementing. See Patrick O'Donovan being very bullish on a child ban one week, and next week tying himself in knots about how Twitter can't be responsible over the CSAMs on their platform
