Grieving as a teacher is a new experience for me. There are different layers to it, and it’s complicated. And it hurts.

I love this thread, and actually feel a little proud that my books do tend to include these types of characters. They are very useful for comedy writing and for keeping your book out of High Fantasy territory. I prefer my fantasy to be Not Unreasonably Far From the Ground.

And in the real world, I'm wearying of people IRL confessing their LLM use to me, professing guilt, and then moving quickly to weak justification. They want absolution from the most vocally anti-AI person they know.

Honestly wild that as a society we’ve settled on a “solution” to funding k-12 classroom supplies that is basically “please, for the love of god, send in tissues 🙏🙏🙏 your progeny are a never-ending deluge of unstoppable snot “

It's very strange people can't separate "will LLMs see increasing use in specialized fields?" from "Is it inevitable that LLMs remain a mass market consumer facing product?". The latter is very much not guaranteed. It only happened at all because OpenAI did a mentally carcinogenic marketing gimmick.

I’ve seen a lot of Oscar speeches; I don’t think any kicker has stuck with me quite like just imploring the audience: “Make art. Make art.” With the addition of “tanks,” which has charmed me out of my shoes since the first time I heard him say it in 2005. youtu.be/qx8yLvb0gZM?...

The precise concludes: "These findings supported the hypothesis that mindset can influence cognitive states in both positive and negative directions, suggesting a means of controlling one's health and cognition." There is, in short, a germ of truth in the "positive thinking" nonsense.

Basically the study finds that if you tell people they are well-rested, they *feel more well-rested*, independent of the actual amount of sleep they've had. People are entirely capable of "fooling themselves," not only into *thinking* they're well-rested, but into *feeling* well-rested!

There's really nothing to recommend it. You should bullshit yourself! Tell yourself you're good, you're capable, that a setback is an opportunity, a rejection is a chance to learn & grow, you're well-rested, things are going to work out, the world will take care of you. You'll be happier!

Dave Eggers, on NPR's Wildcard with Rachel Martin: www.npr.org/2026/06/11/n...
"This is the first time in history when a whole generation is being told or tempted to have a machine write for them to express themselves. But I say like you are one of one unprecedented in the history of human evolution. There's only one of you. …There's never been you in Ever, and there never will be another one of you. So to give your voice to a machine, to say 'speak for me, I'm going to be silent and I'm going to tell a machine to express myself or to tell my narrative,' is such a crime against yourself.

"It's so dystopian, beyond anything I could do in a dystopian novel— and I did a lot; I never saw this coming— would be an entire generation tempted and too many of them acquiescing to the the silencing of their own voice in favor of a bland unthinking machine to voice their souls.

"But if you can tell them, 'even your roughest drafts, even your most disjointed seeming thoughts are going to be valid; and your voice is essential; the human chorus is incomplete without your voice; and I'm going to listen to whatever you say, even the rough drafts, whatever; I want those; I want to see it all," then we can make sure that that they're heard and that they feel like there are humans out there that want to hear that voice and not the machine processed voice.

"…Good lord, we're at a really scary time, you know, but every adult has to be that person. Every teacher, every parent has to be the one saying, 'Do not do this.' Your voice is the only thing that you have naturally. It's the one thing that nobody can replace. So let's hear your truth. Even if it's raw, even if it's unpolished, even if it doesn't come in the five paragraph essay or whatever. Like, let's let's have it straight from you."

one interesting thing so far about loudly hating AI is the way AI lovers are like "wow so you're just totally closed off to hearing another perspective??" as if their perspective hasn't been relentlessly pushed down our throats with no space to push back (particularly in professional settings)

This has been said to death but I'll just say it again: if you're in the creative arts space stop calling your art "content". Call it "work"! Calling your art "work" shows it's the result of time and skill. "Content" makes something sound like it has no purpose other than to take up space.

In K-12, it contributed hugely to the transactional nature of teaching and learning along with online grade books. And it reinforced the push toward scripted curriculum by forcing teachers to plan in advance of knowing where your students were or what was going to happen in the world at large.
