Hey folks! Next week I’ll be in Athens at D.I.C.E. Europe to sit down with Allen Murray of ZA/UM. We’ll be discussing how powerful stories can help the industry navigate its challenges in today’s world. I’m eager to dig into this one!

There are so few celebrities whose life feels worthy of the unbridled adoration they inspire in others, but Dolly’s talent, generosity, and example set the bar. There isn’t another like her.

I promise this isn’t Odyssey discourse, but this interview with the projectionist critical to IMAX’s 70mm rollouts is one of the most delightful I’ve read in a hot minute.

Daily bunny no.3386 talks to the little fish
A bunny stands in a darkened section of an aquarium, watching a lit-up tank full of fishes and also a shark. The fishes stare back at them. Other bunnies wander the aquarium as well, one of whom has a shark plushie

there is literally no amount of caveats or careful wording that will protect you from stupidity or bad faith, so you might as well say things straightforwardly and strongly to begin with.

I came away from this personal project incredibly grateful to the writers who helped mold my craft, the libraries who made their works available to a young kid so she could find them, and the teachers who taught me how to understand, learn, and grow from what I was looking at.

In any case, I know people who never re-read a book once they’ve finished it. I think that is a mistake. In the same way shelving a novel draft and pulling it out months later reveals a whole slurry of changes you wish to make, re-reading the words that made you the writer you are will do the same.

Doing this helped bring back much of the vitality I had felt forcibly disconnected from because the cumulative stress of the last several years. It had weighed down my writing in ways I could have never anticipated.

Doing this personal project was so fun and became a form of self-reflection that became critical to my recovery as writer in the midst of intense burnout and fatigue. For years burnout stole my energy and ability to engage with my writing at the speed and depth I had maintained most of my life.

Reading these books invigorated me completely. They put energy back into my writing. They pushed me to be more nuanced, risky, and bold. The showed me how I could keep the core of who I am as a writer, but experiment and grow too.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
But best of all were the books that improved with time—the ones I couldn’t have fully appreciated in middle school or as a young college student. Even though the book may have changed my life at that time, I hadn’t banked on how much it would change with me.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
These books showed me the elements of my writing style and craft that I still use in my work every day. They made clear who I am as a writer at this very moment in time. These books were delightful and reassuring, and more importantly, helped me feel grounded.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I was also delighted to find some books were exactly as I remembered them, preserved in my memory as if behind glass. I felt like I swam through these ones easily. They were exactly what they were! There wasn’t much left to examine, but still so much to appreciate.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
More than anything these books showed me how far I’ve come, that I’ve grown both as a reader and writer in ways I hadn’t clocked over years of study and practice. Seeing that growth in real time was important for me—a writer who was feeling stagnant.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
These books showed me what to avoid in my writing that I may not having been considering now. It also showed me to think more holistically about my work, and that value in writing comes from more than one element of your approach.

Lis @thewritegame.bsky.social · 14/07/2026
I found some didn’t hold up, which is its own sort of tragedy, but then I asked myself why a book that I now consider poorly executed resonated with me so much at the time I picked it up. The answers informed how I think about what makes writing work beyond the words themselves.

I made a list of all the books in English I was assigned growing up from elementary school through my graduate studies, and a list of all the books and media I was obsessed with growing up. I slowly started reading through them one by one.

Essentially, I was burned out and struggling to write anything I could maintain some measure of conviction for. As a result I decided to rewind the tape back. I wanted to examine what made me the writer I am now and find a new way of approaching the craft that wouldn’t wear me out.

Over the past three years I’ve been slowly working through a personal goal of revisiting what I’ve loosely called my writing lineage. It has been one of the most worthwhile pursuits I’ve done as a writer in the last few years so I’m here to share the wealth.

I like that Charlotte Brontë was basically telling a soapy saga about how the world is a hard and complicated place and sometimes Shit Happens, and Jane Austen is just like, “I’ve met the worst and simultaneously most boring people you can imagine. Hunker down, let me tell you all about them.”

AK is one of the hardest working devs I’ve ever met, only to be matched by her skill surrounding characters and dialogue. I deeply admired the way she made her lines sing, and while I know acquiring such skill takes many years of deliberately working the craft, she made it look effortless.

Jay Turner taught me so so much about writing, companion work, RPGs, and smart dialogue. Whenever we’d get on a call he always brought up points I hadn’t considered in a way that made me a better writer, designer, and person. I loved coordinating on character work together—a real privilege.

I worked with Katie once she joined the Avowed team, and the difference she made was immediate. She understood RPGs inside-out, her dialogue made us snort in laughter constantly, and she wrote the most agonizing conundrums in quest lines that players simply loved. I miss working with her every day.

my belief is that at the end of the day, great games are made by groups of people who have high trust with each other & can fluidly execute a shared vision. which is a small part of why these layoffs are so devastating- it's not just about jobs, it's about these "trust structures" being torn apart.
