Axios writer: I melted my brain with AI. Not only can I no longer read, but I don't even understand the purpose of reading anymore. Here's how you can also do this. www.axios.com/2026/08/11/r...
Axios: AI has become my reading buddy as I've plowed through my summer book list, helping me keep track of plots and characters, unpack themes, and make sense of wordy, old prose.

Why it matters: The way many of us actually read books — a few pages before bed, a chapter at the beach, another on a plane — makes it easy to lose the thread. AI can help you pick it back up without starting over.
📖 I really got into using AI while reading James Fenimore Cooper's "The Last of the Mohicans." The text was far too dense for casual vacation reading. My first prompt asked:

"I'd like a guide as I read The Last of the Mohicans who can help me understand what I've read and where the story is, without giving spoilers or getting ahead of my progress. Can you do this, chapter by chapter?"
The robot agreed: "Cooper's sentences are long and his diction is archaic."

“this person is bad so their work was always bad” is also a really dangerous view to take because it leads to - unconscious or not - a bias towards “but I do like this other person’s work, ergo they must be a good person” which, as we have seen over and over, is simply not true

The Roman Catholic archbishop of Indianapolis has dispensed the Sunday mass obligation for those afraid of detention or intimidation by ICE. What a profoundly messed up world we live in! 🕯️
A letter on official letterhead

CHRIST THE CORNERSTONE
GENERAL DECREE
Dispensation from the Obligation to Participate in Mass
On Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation
Whereas recent days have seen an increase in immigration enforcement in the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, causing a significant rise in fear and anxiety amongst our immigrant communities, and
Whereas the Christian faithful have an obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation (c. 1246§1, 1247), and the fear and anxiety caused by the recent immigration enforcement activity may deter some of the Christian faithful from fulfilling their obligation to attend Mass, which would be detrimental to their spiritual welfare, and
Whereas the Archdiocesan bishop is able to dispense the faithful from disciplinary laws, both universal and particular, when it contributes to their spiritual welfare (c. 87 §1).
I hereby dispense from the obligation to participate in Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation all those persons living within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis who reasonably fear being detained, separated from their families, or experience intimidation due to the increased immigration enforcement. This applies even to those with proper legal documentation.
This dispensation will last through September 30th, 2026, unless further extended by decree.
The Christian faithful who discern they must make use of this dispensation are encouraged to supplement spiritual practices on Sunday and Holy Days of Obligation with practices such as praying with the Sunday readings of the Lectionary, praying the rosary or other sacramentals, and/or watching a livestreamed Mass on television or the internet.
Pastors and all those who minister to the faithful within the Archdiocese of Indianapolis are encouraged to attend to the spiritual care of those who must make use of this dispensation to the best of their ability, especially regarding the Sacraments Penance and Anointing of the Sick, or the distribu…

Let’s say you’ve already spent some time in the United States Army, a vicious colonial project that in recent years has been weaponized by a government with even more openly fascistic tendencies than in the past. What would get you to reup, aside from general economic hardship that the Army has long preyed upon? Special training? Time and money to attend college? Extra leave to spend as you please? OK, well how about this: Four—that’s right, four!—days off to play a video game.

Discworld QOTD, from The Truth
Mr. Slant was silent as he walked out into the night air with his new client, but after a while he said: “I have presented a writ of Exeo Carco Cum Nihil Pretii on the basis of Olfacere Violarum and Sini Plenus Piscis. Tomorrow I shall move that you are Ab Hamo, and in the event of this not working I—”
“Smelling of Violets,” said William, who had been translating in his head, “and Pockets Full of Fish?”
“Based on a case some six hundred years ago when the defendant successfully pleaded that, although he had indeed pushed the victim into a lake, the man came out with his pockets full of fish, to his net benefit,” said Mr. Slant crisply. “In any case, I shall argue that if withholding information from the Watch is a crime, every person in the city is guilty.”
