My #1 desire for a lead-pipe-cruel 2027 Oversight Committee is subpoenas specifically of every transplanted 8channer and lapsed school shooter they have running the social media accounts. I want their dehydrated, unfuckable mugs on TV perpetually creeping out Pennsylvania swing voters.

Anxious about the elections? Imagine that you’re walking in a desert when you see a tortoise, crawling toward you. You reach down, you flip the tortoise over on its back. The tortoise lays on its back, trying to turn itself over, but it can’t, not without your help. You’re not helping. Why?

No, it is proving that a bunch of things we assumed were optimal because they “looked nice” in a certain sense were wrong because a far uglier solution was better. Example: the tightest way to pack 9 squares into a big one is with a 3x3 grid of side length 3. The best way to pack 11 is this:

Unpopular opinion: LLMs are generally deradicalizing people whose beliefs are based on pure propaganda. I've been watching this happen slowly with some people I care about. ChatGPT is one of the reasons they finally accept that the NRA, OAN, and NewsMax are lying to them.

you need to just pack the supreme court, man. they don't care about what arguments you make, the legal movement formed with an explicit objective of making Watergate legal isn't going to make Watergate illegal.

i suppose i’m not surprised that it is difficult to make people care about something that is low visibility — the vast majority of people have no idea who piker is — and low salience. i think we’re also going to find, for similar reasons, that the anti-trans messaging isn’t working either.

look, if you're worried about being remembered, don't try to pursue immortality or whatever, the smart move is to start selling substandard copper and then make sure anyone who complains deposits a physical copy of that complaint in a site that will later be archaeologically significant

There is a moment at the very very end of Abdul El-Sayed's podcast with Ezra Klein (book recommendation section) where he talks about the idea of "speaking truth to pain" and this will be staying with me for an extremely long time. www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/o...
But there’s also something about truth to pain. We talk a lot about truth to power, but I think it’s actually a lot harder to speak truth to pain. I say that as someone who went to medical school, realizing that in a lot of our politics right now, we’ve got to get a lot better at speaking truth to pain if we’re going to get through some of these challenges that we have.

What does “truth to pain” mean?

It’s one thing to look power in the eye and say: You’re wrong about this. But there’s a way in which pain is very difficult to reason with. Because when somebody is in their pain, they’re in their trauma. They see that pain, and they may not see what’s causing it.

I remember just very explicitly being in a trauma ward with a gunshot wound patient and watching this big guy with his hand on his gunshot wound. All the folks are trying to pull his hand off his pain, that point of his gunshot wound, this clear vulnerability.

And this emergency room doctor had the presence of mind to be like: Everyone, stop. And she looks him in the eyes, and she’s like: I get that really hurts, and I’m so sorry that you’re here. You don’t want to be here. We don’t want you to be here. But if you don’t let us fix this, you could die. So I’m going to take your hand, and I’m going to move it off, OK? Because I need to get there so that you can live.

She was speaking truth to pain. He understands he’s at the hospital, he needs care, but he also doesn’t want anybody to touch the wound. Which is a natural thing. And I think it is a really great metaphor for how we think about a lot of these challenges we talked about today.

Not a great sign when your 12-person private fundraiser includes someone who hates you enough to leak damaging audio
The audio of Mr. Paxton was shared with The Times by an attendee who recorded him speaking at a private fund-raiser in Washington attended by roughly a dozen people. The person, who opposes Mr. Paxton’s campaign and provided the recording to The Times, was granted anonymity because Mr. Paxton’s remarks were private.

one thing that isn't accounted for in the SuperPAC discussion is that it changes the economics for partisan media firms from "pick the ads most likely to elect your principal, donald trump" to "pick the ads which are most likely to induce further donations by your principal, elon musk"

The GOP cut funding to the IRS because *audits work* and they fundamentally don't believe rich people should have to play by the rules.
Line chart titled "Revenue per audit," subtitled "In-person audits, 2010-2014." It plots average revenue and average cost per audit by taxpayer income percentile, poorer to richer, from the 0–5th percentile to the top 0.1%. Source: Boning et al. 2023, "A Welfare Analysis of Tax Audits Across the Income Distribution."

Across the bottom half of the income distribution, revenue and cost track closely, both around $3,000–$6,000 per audit. Above the median, revenue pulls ahead of cost: about $10,000 vs. $5,000 near the 90th percentile, and about $17,000 vs. $8,000 at the 95th–99th. At the top, revenue jumps to about $31,000 for the 99–99.9th percentile and about $90,000 for the top 0.1%.

Saw an ad for an AI chatbot and the example use case was a teen building an anime boyfriend, then telling him that he had a crush on his cousin. Bot asked if she was into him and he said he wasn't sure. Then he made his own avatar and replayed the chat as an anime of them chatting over drinks.

As I understand it, pawpaws aren't commercial because: 1) They spoil too quickly. 2) They're pollinated by bloat flies, nearby dead animals are needed to attract them. 3) They contain neurotoxin at an unacceptable level for regular consumption.
